Ryu Lion's Origin Story Hits the Page
Ryu Lion is one of DanMachi's most beloved supporting characters — the stoic, impossibly skilled elf waitress at the Hostess of Fertility whose combat prowess rivals that of top-tier adventurers. Astrea Record, originally a light novel spinoff by series creator Fujino Ōmori, digs into the backstory that made her who she is: her time as a member of the Astraea Familia and the events that left her as its sole survivor.
Now that story has a manga adaptation. Comic Natalie reported that the serialization of Astrea Record: Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? Tales of Heroes launched in the June 2026 issue of Monthly Big Gangan, published by Square Enix on May 25, 2026. The debut drops chapters 1 and 2 together, introducing readers to a younger Ryu alongside Alise Lovell, her former companion and the Astraea Familia's captain.
What Is Astrea Record?
For fans who haven't read the light novels, Astrea Record is a prequel set years before Bell Cranel ever arrived in Orario. It follows Ryu Lion during her days as an active adventurer in the Astraea Familia — a justice-driven group of adventurers led by the goddess Astraea. The story centers on Ryu's relationship with Alise Lovell and the rest of their party, building toward the tragedy that ultimately shaped Ryu into the haunted loner fans know from the main series.
The light novel version, also written by Fujino Ōmori, runs three volumes in Japan with character designs by Kakage (distinct from Suzuhito Yasuda's designs for the main series). Yen Press publishes the English translation under the full title Astrea Record: Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? Tales of Heroes.
A Big Moment for the DanMachi Franchise
The manga launch comes during a strong stretch for the DanMachi franchise. A sixth anime season was announced in February 2026 at the series' 10th anniversary event, set to adapt volume 21 of the main light novel — the beginning of what Ōmori has described as the final arc. No release date has been confirmed for Season 6, though production is underway at J.C.Staff.
Karu Yoneshiro handles art duties on the Astrea Record manga. The copyright block credits both Kakage and Suzuhito Yasuda for original character designs, reflecting how the spinoff draws from both the main series' cast and its own original characters.
Looking Ahead
The Astrea Record manga serialization will continue in Monthly Big Gangan, published monthly by Square Enix. International readers who want to get ahead of the story can pick up the Astrea Record light novels in English from Yen Press — all three volumes are available now. No English-language manga release has been announced yet, though Square Enix and Yen Press have a well-established pipeline for DanMachi manga localizations.
With the main anime heading into its final arc and this prequel now getting the manga treatment, DanMachi is clearly in franchise-expansion mode heading into its second decade. Whether Ryu Lion's tragic backstory finds new fans through Yoneshiro's art remains to be seen when chapters start circulating — but for a character who consistently ranks among the series' most popular, the adaptation feels overdue.
