Shaft Is the Only Name Attached So Far
According to Japanese entertainment news site Comic Natalie, the TV anime will be produced at Shaft (Puella Magi Madoka Magica, the Monogatari series). That is the full extent of the production credits for now. No director, character designer, or broadcast window has been announced, and neither project has named a cast. The live-action drama is in the same position, with no broadcaster or premiere target attached. Further details for both versions will roll out through the series' official X account.
The rollout was built around the manga's own calendar. The news dropped on August 31, 2026, the date the story's characters keep reliving, and Kodansha's Comic DAYS manga service marked the occasion with a bonus episode that was readable only on August 31 itself. The longer-running part of the celebration is still live: four volumes of the manga are free to read on Comic DAYS for one week.
A Comedy Stuck on the Last Day of Summer Break
The Long Summer of August 31st (8月31日のロングサマー) follows two high schoolers, Takaya Suzuki and Kana Takagi, who are trapped in a time loop that resets to August 31 over and over. The pair spend their endless final day of summer break trying to figure out what caused the loop, and the series is billed as a youth time-loop comedy that tackles romance head-on.
Ikkado Ito launched the manga in Morning, Kodansha's seinen magazine, in March 2023, and it has reached 13 collected volumes as of August 2026. Getting both an anime and a live-action drama in a single announcement is a notable commitment for a series that has been running just over three years.
Looking Ahead
Neither adaptation has a date yet. Both were announced without cast, staff beyond Shaft, or scheduling, and the official X account is where updates will land first. No international streaming partner has been announced for the anime, and the drama likewise has no confirmed home.
The manga itself is already available in English. Seven Seas publishes the print edition in North America, with the first volume out since April 2025, and Kodansha's K Manga app carries the series digitally in English.
