What a "Light Anime" Actually Is
BALLOON, the label behind the adaptation, launched in mid-2025 as a joint project between printing giant Dai Nippon Printing (DNP), Imagica Infos, Cybird, and BLUE RIGHTS. Its productions use the Light Anime format, a pipeline developed by DNP that cuts animation time and cost while keeping the look of the original manga artwork intact. The label's plan is built on volume: four titles in 2026, scaling to more than ten per year by 2028, with international distribution as a stated goal from the start.
Aoharu Once More is the project's third title. According to the announcement reported by Japanese entertainment news site Comic Natalie, 町田莉果子 (likely Rikako Machida) directs, and Imagica Infos / Imageworks Studio handles animation production. The rest of the staff and the full scope of the adaptation have not been announced yet.
A Workplace Reunion and a Second Shot at Youth
The manga follows Hayato Kobayashi (小林隼人) and Ritsu Onishi (大西律), two men who went to the same high school and lost touch after graduation. Years later they end up at the same workplace, and seeing Ritsu again forces Hayato to recognize his feelings for what they are. The title riffs on "aoharu," Japanese slang for the charged emotional intensity of adolescence, and the English edition's synopsis spells out Hayato's pitch to Ritsu: relive their youth, just one more time.
The series ran on from RED, a label under BL publisher Shucream, and is collected in a single volume. In a comment published alongside the announcement, series creator Miyata called it "an incredible honor" to be able to see their own characters move and speak, and asked readers to keep supporting the original manga alongside the adaptation.
Miyata's comment also touches on why the format matters here. Because Light Anime is designed to preserve the source artwork rather than redraw it, this adaptation should keep Miyata's linework on screen. That is a different proposition from a conventional TV anime, which filters a manga through a new character designer.
Looking Ahead
Cast and a premiere window are the two big blanks, and Comic Natalie's report lists both as still to come. For a sense of the label's pace, BALLOON's first title, Saioshi no Gikei o Mederu Tame, Nagaiki Shimasu! (最推しの義兄を愛でるため、長生きします！), is targeting a 2026 broadcast in Japan.
No international streaming or distribution partner has been announced for Aoharu Once More, though BALLOON was founded with overseas rollout as an explicit aim, so a global release would fit the label's plans.
