The anime adaptation of Kaiji Kawaguchi's manga Chinmoku no Kantai will be released in HD as the Chinmoku no Kantai COMPLETE Blu-ray (Special Limited Edition) on March 26, 2027, according to a MANTANWEB report on Yahoo! News Japan.
The set marks the 30th anniversary of the anime adaptation. The HD remaster will use the original negative film of the Chinmoku no Kantai TV special, which aired in 1996, and its two sequel OVAs, Chinmoku no Kantai VOYAGE 2 and Chinmoku no Kantai VOYAGE 3.
The set includes a booklet with an interview with Kawaguchi. The booklet also features a conversation between director Ryōsuke Takahashi and Masane Tsukayama, who voices Kaieda.
In a comment reported by MANTANWEB, Kawaguchi said the work's view of the nuclear issue "isn't outdated," because people are still uncertain and no answer has been found (translated). He added that it is "by no means an old work from 30 years ago" and said he hopes viewers will watch it again with a present-day perspective.
Takahashi said (translated): "The problems that Chinmoku no Kantai raised still haven't been solved at all in reality. That's why this work is still alive today!"
Sunrise produced the animation. Takahashi directed, Sōji Yoshikawa wrote the scripts, and Akira Senju composed the music. The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force is credited with research cooperation.
