From the Bottom of the School Ladder
Viral Hit (喧嘩独学) places its protagonist, Kōta Shimura, at the absolute bottom of his high school's social hierarchy. Based on the Korean webtoon by Taejun Pak (PTJ cartoon company) and illustrator Kim Junghyun, the original has accumulated over 2.2 billion views on WEBTOON worldwide. The Japanese live-action adaptation transplants the story into a Japanese high school, where Shimura starts livestreaming his fights and turning humiliation into viral content.
Japanese film news site Eiga Natalie released a character relationship chart, a group photo of the four leads, and the opening minutes of Episode 1 to mark today's launch. The opening footage shows Shimura in white face paint, dragged onto a livestream and saying with bitter humor, "This is my fun school life." He sets out to overturn his life as everyone's punching bag using the most reckless methods available.
Meet the Cast
Ōji Suzuka (鈴鹿央士), who led Netflix's From Me to You: Kimi ni Todoke, plays Shimura. Ai Mikami (見上愛) takes on Yashio Aki, a junior harboring her own secrets. Araki Sugō (菅生新樹) plays Kanegon, the schemer who whispers a "devil's whisper" into Shimura's ear and pushes him toward fight streaming. Meru Nukumi (生見愛瑠) rounds out the core four as Asamiya Kaho, described as a key figure in the story.
The supporting cast features veteran actors Tsurutarō Kataoka (片岡鶴太郎) and Mieko Harada (原田美枝子), along with Yūsuke Iseya (伊勢谷友介) and GENERATIONS member Mendy Sekiguchi (関口メンディー). The newly released character chart maps the personalities surrounding the four leads.
Behind the Camera
Director Hideki Takeuchi (Thermae Romae, Cells at Work!) reunites with screenwriter Yūichi Tokunaga, whose Fly Me to the Saitama screenplay won the Japan Academy Prize for Best Screenplay. Face 2 fAKE handles the music.
Takeuchi described the four-month shoot as high-energy. "It's a youth story with action mixed in, so the intensity just keeps building," he told Eiga Natalie. "Everyone looked out for each other on set, and that only made the team stronger." Between takes, the cast and crew held barbecues and made takoyaki. "We were filming at a school, so visually it was basically a school festival," Takeuchi added.
Looking Ahead
Viral Hit is streaming now exclusively on Netflix worldwide. The original webtoon is available in English on WEBTOON under the title Viral Hit. No additional season has been announced.
