A Freebie That Pulls Double Duty
Every year, the big draw of Sho-Colle! (short for Shogakukan Comic Collection) is the giveaway item: buy one eligible comic at a participating bookstore and you get one for free. For 2026, that item is a privacy-protection sleeve, the kind you slip over a student ID or driver's license to hide the printed info and guard it from scratches. Each sleeve comes paired with a double-sided card built around the artwork and world of one of Shogakukan's series, according to Japanese anime news site Anime Anime.
There are 13 designs in total, and the publisher is fronting the set with two of its flagship series, Detective Conan and Doraemon. The eligible list is much wider than that, though: 50 series qualify this year, spanning established hits and newer titles Shogakukan is betting on as its next breakouts.
The fair started its staggered rollout on September 1, 2026, and runs while supplies last. Shogakukan notes that the campaign period, distribution method, and eligible titles can differ from store to store, so it's worth checking the official Sho-Colle! site for the participating-bookstore list before making a trip.
Over 1,500 Manga Volumes Free Through November
Running alongside the bookstore fair is 漫祭2026 (roughly "Manga Fest 2026"), a large-scale digital campaign that launched September 4 across Japanese e-book storefronts. The scale is the story here: around 470 series and more than 1,500 volumes will be free to read during the campaign window.
The free titles arrive in eight themed waves, with a new batch going up every Friday. The opening feature covers crowd-pleasing shonen manga (September 4 to 17), followed by a love-story fair, a shonen and seinen classics selection, and a spotlight on vertical-scroll titles Shogakukan pitches as its next big hits. Later waves cover seinen thrillers and human drama, shojo and josei picks, the ever-popular isekai and villainess genre, and a closing shojo and josei classics selection that runs October 23 through November 5.
Looking Ahead
Both campaigns are Japan-only for now. The sleeves are handed out exclusively at physical bookstores in Japan, and the free digital volumes are limited to Japanese e-book stores, with no international component announced. For English readers, the featured series are easier to reach: Viz Media publishes Detective Conan in English under the title Case Closed.
The free-manga waves keep rotating weekly through November 5, 2026, so the campaign still has two months of runway. The sleeve giveaway has no fixed end date. Once a store's stock is gone, it's gone, which in past years has made the early weeks the safest window for anyone hunting a specific design.
