Shin Ōnuma Asked for a TV Series, Not a Movie
The most interesting detail in the announcement comes from director Shin Ōnuma himself. In a comment published alongside the reveal, reported by Japanese anime news site Anime Anime, Ōnuma revealed that a theatrical release was on the table for the sequel. He asked to make it a TV series instead, so the story could be carried through to the end of the manga, and he says the production was given the runtime to do it properly.
He also noted that the team wants to expand on parts of the original manga, and that creator Hiroshi Hiroyama is supervising and cooperating on the adaptation. The sequel itself had been announced back when Licht Nameless Girl hit theaters in August 2021; what's new is the title, the format, and the confirmation that this is the end of the road.
The Licht Team Returns
FINALE carries over its core staff from the 2021 film. Ōnuma directs, Ken Takahashi is series director, Kenji Inoue and Hazuki Minase handle scripts, and Kazuya Hirata returns as character designer. Silver Link is once again on animation production.
The voice cast is intact too. Mai Kadowaki returns as Illyasviel von Einzbern, with Kaori Nazuka as Miyu Edelfelt and Chiwa Saitō as Chloe von Einzbern. On the Ainsworth side, Sumire Morohoshi voices Pandora, Natsuki Hanae (Tanjiro Kamado in Demon Slayer) is back as Julian Ainsworth, and Katsuyuki Konishi plays Darius Ainsworth.
To mark the announcement, Hirata drew a second teaser visual showing Illya and Miyu facing forward with their wands raised while Chloe smiles beside them.
The Last Battle of the Magical Girls
Prisma Illya is the long-running magical girl spin-off of Fate/stay night, starring fan-favorite Illya as its heroine. Hiroyama's manga began in Kadokawa's Monthly Comp Ace magazine in September 2007, and the TV anime first aired in 2013, running multiple seasons before the story moved to theaters with Licht Nameless Girl.
The official synopsis picks up after the brutal fight against the Ainsworth family, as Illya and her friends finally reach the truth about Pandora, the "nameless girl" of the film's subtitle. Julian tries to open Pandora's box, the pithos, to grant her the release of death. Illya manages to cut through that fate with her stubborn wish to save everyone, but Darius, having completed his "concept replacement," takes over Julian's body and pushes ahead with the Ainsworths' long-held goal of saving humanity. The box opens, calamity spills out, and Illya, Miyu, and Chloe head into what the synopsis calls the magical girls' final battle.
Looking Ahead
FINALE is set to broadcast in Japan in 2027; no season window or exact premiere date has been given yet. In the meantime, the official Prisma Illya X account is running a giveaway: follow the account and repost the designated post for a chance to win one of five B2 posters of the new teaser visual, with entries open through August 3.
No international streaming partner has been announced for FINALE. For reference, Sentai Filmworks released the Licht film on home video and select digital outlets in the West, according to Anime News Network, so keep an eye out for word on where the finale will stream outside Japan.
