Kamiyama and Toh EnJoe Rebuild Gundam From the Ground Up
Kenji Kamiyama (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Eden of the East) directs and handles series composition, with novelist Toh EnJoe (円城塔) supervising the science-fiction setting. According to Japanese entertainment news site Oricon News, the pair rebuilt the franchise's core question from scratch: why does a Gundam need to exist at all? The stated goal is an approach that differs from previous Gundam works.
That world design is the spine of what Bandai Namco is calling the "RG Project." The anime shares a single setting and history with the game GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT, which was unveiled at Summer Game Fest in June 2026, but each tells its story from a different vantage point. The anime is set roughly 100 years before the game and covers the origin point of that world. The game picks up in the era that follows the events and choices shown in the anime, and players take part in that history by making choices of their own. The pitch boils down to two experiences: watching a story unfold, and stepping into the world and getting involved.
Animation production is handled by SOLA ANIMATION, with Bandai Namco Filmworks producing, per the official English Gundam site. Eiichi Shimizu designs the Gundams, STATO provides the original character designs, Miyako Takasu adapts them for animation, and Gō Shiina composes the score.
A.A. 45: Humanity Without Earth
The story starts with a gift. An object capable of interstellar travel arrives from outside the solar system and hands humanity three "gospels": gravity control, faster-than-light communication, and a technology called Materialize that turns images into physical matter. Civilization booms and spreads across the entire solar system.
Less than ten years after its discovery, the object runs out of control and spawns an aggressive, self-replicating ecosystem. People start calling this unknown ecosystem the Apocalypse. After three months of fighting, the front line stalls in orbit around Earth, and humanity is forced to abandon the planet. That year is recorded as A.A. 1, short for After Apocalypse.
Jump ahead to A.A. 45. A generation of children born on the Moon and in space colonies has grown up treating the Apocalypse as part of everyday life. On the lunar surface, a boy named Ray Azumi (アズミ・レイ) wakes up. That's where the synopsis ends and, presumably, where the show begins. The official English site adds that Ray is a war orphan who pilots an experimental Gundam called ZERO.
Takeo Ōtsuka Comes Back to Gundam as the Lead
Ray is voiced by Takeo Ōtsuka (Aqua Hoshino in Oshi no Ko, Lauda Neill in Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury). This is his second Gundam TV series, but his first time carrying the lead role. He's the only cast member named so far, and Oricon doesn't mention any additional characters.
The new scene stills released with the broadcast announcement are hosted on Oricon's photo gallery for the article. No new trailer accompanied the date reveal. The only footage out right now is the teaser PV that Bandai Namco Filmworks posted to its Gundam Channel on YouTube when the project was first announced in July 2026.
Looking Ahead
Japanese TV broadcast starts in April 2027. The official English Gundam site lists an April 2027 launch for North America as well, but no streaming platform has been named for any region yet.
The game arrives first, and it doubles as a head start on the world. GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT launches March 5, 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam, according to Bandai Namco Entertainment, which puts it about a month ahead of the anime it's set a century after. Whether the game ends up spoiling how the anime's story resolves is something Bandai Namco hasn't addressed.
