Mana Ashida Takes On Maomao
Maomao is a tricky character to get right. An apothecary raised in the pleasure district, she untangles the rear palace's mysteries and conspiracies with her pharmacology knowledge and an unnervingly sharp eye. On the surface she is dry and detached, but she turns fiercely determined when someone she cares about is in danger. According to the announcement, first detailed in Japan by anime news site Anime Anime, that mix of intelligence, backbone, and slight recklessness is exactly what Ashida is being asked to play head-on.
International viewers may know Mana Ashida from Pacific Rim (2013), her Hollywood debut. In Japan she has been famous far longer. She broke out at age 5 in the 2010 drama Mother, landed her first lead role in a serial drama with 2011's Marumo no Okite, and has collected a run of acting prizes in recent years, including the Excellent Supporting Actress award at the 48th Japan Academy Film Prize for the live-action Cells at Work! (2024).
The author is on board, emphatically. Hyuuga, who writes the original light novels, says that when Ashida's casting was decided, her first thought was relief, and that meeting the actress in person settled it: "It's Maomao!" Ashida, for her part, calls herself a longtime fan of the original novels and says the shoot was full of moments where her fan side took over and her heart would not stop racing.
Toho and Amazon MGM Studios Built the Rear Palace for Real
The series pairs Toho, the studio behind Godzilla Minus One and the company that has delivered The Apothecary Diaries TV anime since 2023, with Amazon MGM Studios. The source novels, published under Imagica Infos' Hero Bunko light novel imprint, have passed 57 million copies in worldwide circulation across the series. The production scale matches the material: filming ran six months on large-scale sets that fully recreated the rear palace, with the stated goal of hitting the highest possible standard in production design, costumes, and VFX.
Yuki Saito directs, from a screenplay by Erika Yoshida (series composition on Bocchi the Rock!). TOHO Studios serves as the production company. In his announcement comment, Toho executive Hisashi Usui joked that Toho "properly makes things other than Godzilla," and teased a lavish cast still to be revealed. Buddy Marini, who heads Amazon MGM Studios in Japan, framed the appeal simply: a mystery solved through one girl's knowledge of medicine, layered with grounded human drama, has already won over audiences worldwide regardless of genre.
A Teaser That Hides Maomao's Eyes, and a "Real Jinshi"
The teaser visual released with the announcement deliberately keeps Ashida's eyes out of frame, showing pressed-together lips, a composed stance, and a handkerchief in her hand. As the Anime Anime report notes, longtime readers will find it hard not to think of a certain famous scene from early in the story.
Hyuuga also shared stories from her set visits. The sets and costumes were so lavish that, by her own admission, she kept wondering what everything cost, and she praised the attention to detail across the script, props, hair and makeup, and even coaching on etiquette and how the characters walk. The best anecdote involves Jinshi, the beautiful palace official who looms over Maomao's story. The role has not been officially announced, but the actor playing him was on set when Hyuuga visited with her niece, who could not stop smiling. The author's two-word verdict: "Real Jinshi."
Looking Ahead
The Prime Original drama The Apothecary Diaries streams exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories in 2028. No month or season within that window has been given, and Mana Ashida is currently the only officially confirmed cast member. Usui's comment promises further cast reveals, and going by Hyuuga's set stories, a Jinshi announcement is presumably near the top of the list. In the meantime, the TV anime that introduced most of the world to Maomao has been airing since 2023, with Toho on the production side there as well.
