A Dark-Comedy Web Manga Goes Global

Jimoto Saiko! (地元最高!) started life in February 2021 as a self-published manga on X (formerly Twitter) by creator usagi. Eight collected volumes later, published by Saizusha, the series has built a massive following for its jarring contrast: adorable character designs wrapped around a story steeped in violence, drugs, poverty, and crime.

The premise follows Chanel-chan, a relentlessly upbeat girl whose complete lack of awareness keeps dragging her into dangerous situations in a rough neighborhood. Japanese manga news site Comic Natalie's report describes the series as a "violence daily entertainment" where the story reads like "collecting and boiling all the sins of this world" despite the sugar-sweet art. Creator usagi has said the series was born from noticing that slice-of-life manga almost always depicted affluent characters, prompting a deliberate turn toward "the more impoverished parts of society."

The teaser visual shows Chanel-chan surrounded by her friends and senpai against a backdrop of their beloved hometown. A teaser PV set to aiko's 2009 track "milk" is already available. The contrast between the breezy pop song and the manga's violent content is the tonal whiplash the series thrives on.

The Staff Behind the Adaptation

MAPPA revealed the anime during its 15th anniversary event on June 19, alongside updates for Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man, and other marquee titles. Directing Jimoto Saiko! is Tokio Igarashi (五十嵐季旺), who served as episode director on Attack on Titan The Final Season and Vinland Saga before moving into his first series director role here.

The screenplay comes from Ryo Takada (高田亮), a notable pick. Takada is primarily a live-action film screenwriter whose credits include The Light Shines Only There (Soko nomi nite Hikari Kagayaku), which won the Kinema Junpo Best Ten screenplay award in 2014. Bringing a live-action sensibility to a manga about poverty and crime could give Jimoto Saiko! a grittier dramatic foundation than a typical anime comedy.

Character design is handled by Rio (りお), with Naoki Takada as art director and Takahiro Ogawa as animation producer.

The Creator and aiko React

Creator usagi expressed disbelief in a published comment: "I'm thrilled that a manga I was just putting out on my own, calling it a serialization, is actually getting an anime!" usagi also revealed a candid detail about the manga's early days, noting that their editor once lent them one million yen out of pocket when usagi went bankrupt during serialization.

Singer-songwriter aiko, a fan of the manga, reacted to hearing her song "milk" in the teaser: "I was so moved hearing milk playing! I'll be watching while drinking goldfish." The goldfish drink reference is a nod to the manga's in-universe culture.

Looking Ahead

Jimoto Saiko! will stream exclusively on Netflix worldwide, though no premiere date has been announced. The Netflix exclusivity means international fans will get simultaneous access rather than waiting for a delayed regional pickup.

No voice cast has been revealed yet. With MAPPA's current production slate packed, including Jujutsu Kaisen Season 4, Chainsaw Man, and several other newly announced titles, scheduling will be worth monitoring.

The source manga is not currently published in English. All eight volumes are available in Japanese from Saizusha, and the original serialization continues on usagi's X account.
