Kenji Kamiyama Rebuilds Gundam From Scratch
According to a report from Japanese anime news site Anime Anime, the series comes from Kenji Kamiyama (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Eden of the East), who directs and handles series composition. In his announcement comment, Kamiyama said the pitch was for a Gundam set in a new timeline, one that belongs to neither the Universal Century nor the real-world calendar.
He admitted the early stages were not much fun. Working out what replaces the Earth Federation and Zeon, what happens to Newtypes and Minovsky particles, and where the war went left him going in circles. The turning point, he said, was realizing that getting to build his favorite franchise from zero in the present day was reason enough to enjoy it. Once he did, in his words, "a pretty interesting Gundam came together."
The project frames its central question as why Gundam needs to exist at all, and Kamiyama is constructing that answer together with novelist Toh EnJoe, credited as SF concept supervisor. The rest of the staff list is stacked: Eiichi Shimizu on Gundam design, STATO on original character designs, Miyako Takasu (高須美野子) as character designer and chief animation director, and Gō Shiina composing the music. SOLA ANIMATION handles animation production, with Sunrise on planning, Bandai Namco Filmworks producing, and the traditional Yoshiyuki Tomino and Hajime Yatate credit on original story.
Three Gifts, One Apocalypse
The story is set in a future where an object capable of interstellar travel arrived from outside the solar system carrying three technologies the setting calls its "three gospels": gravity control, faster-than-light communication, and Materialize, a technology that turns images into physical matter. Humanity used them to spread across the entire solar system in an age of unprecedented prosperity.
Less than ten years after its discovery, the object went berserk. It began spawning an aggressive, self-replicating ecosystem of silicon-based lifeforms, and people came to call this unknown threat the Apocalypse. After three months of fighting, the front lines stalled in orbit. Humanity abandoned Earth and recorded that year as A.A. 1, for After Apocalypse.
The anime picks up in A.A. 45, when children born on the Moon and in the colonies have grown up treating the Apocalypse as everyday reality. On the Moon, a boy named Ray Azumi wakes up. Ray is a war orphan who lost his parents to an Apocalypse attack, and he becomes the dedicated pilot of the Gundam ZERO, an experimental new-generation mobile suit classified as a "Gundam type" and built to fight the Apocalypse.
Takeo Ōtsuka, who voices Jinshi in The Apothecary Diaries, plays Ray. In his comment, Ōtsuka called working on a new Gundam series an honor, said he has been happily puzzling his way through Kamiyama's story in the recording booth, and pointed to the anime-and-game project structure as something he is genuinely excited about.
The first teaser visual pairs Ray with the Gundam ZERO, and the teaser trailer shows fragments of the world, its mobile suits, and the Apocalypse itself.
One World, Two Entry Points
The anime is half of a larger plan called the RG Project, which pairs it with Gundam Rogue Orbit, the all-new action game revealed at Summer Game Fest in June 2026. Both works share a single world and history but describe it from different distances and standpoints. The anime is set roughly 100 years before the game and tells the origin story of that world. The game then drops players into the future built on those events, letting them make their own choices inside the same history. The stated idea is that watching a story and entering a world become two routes into one timeline.
Rogue Orbit's lead mobile suit, the Gundam Helix, received new design art alongside the announcement, as did the game's version of the Apocalypse. Merchandise is already locked in on both sides: HG 1/144 Gunpla model kits of the Gundam ZERO and the Gundam Helix were announced with the reveal.
Looking Ahead
Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO (read as "Alex Zero") is set to roll out in 2027, though Bandai Namco has not said whether that means a TV series, a film, or another format, and no month is attached yet. The reveal landed during San Diego Comic-Con weekend, and the teaser trailer is up now on the official Gundam Channel on YouTube. On the game side, Gundam Rogue Orbit is also targeting 2027 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam. International streaming plans for the anime have not been announced.
