Masashi Ebara Picks Up the Gun Arm Again
Masashi Ebara (Might Guy in Naruto, Hohenheim in the 2003 Fullmetal Alchemist) is the through-line for this revival. He voiced Bolt Crank in the 1997 TV series and its follow-up, and he is the only cast member named so far for The Over Order. In a comment published with the announcement on Japanese anime news site Animate Times, Ebara said he was thrilled to meet Bolt Crank again after 30 years. He added that he is glad to take another run at a series he loves, this time alongside a new generation of voice actors, and closed by wondering what Bolt's gentle, watchful gaze on humanity asks of us.
The premise has not changed. Bolt Crank is a mysterious "adventurer," a freelance fixer who eats metal and can regenerate any weapon from it, pulling guns out of his right hand when a job goes sideways. He never talks about his past or his goals. The official story blurb has him drifting from job to job across a world of encounters and partings, lost memories, and a truth hidden somewhere out there.
Yoshitomi Writes the Script Himself
This is the third Eat-Man anime, and the first where the manga's creator is in the writers' room. Akihito Yoshitomi is credited for the original work, the screenplay and the design concepts, and the staff list frames The Over Order as a new Yoshitomi story built on the original Eat-Man rather than a straight adaptation. In his comment, Yoshitomi said he was involved from the scriptwriting stage this time and wrote freely and "on the fly." He called the collaborative process a learning experience compared with making manga alone, and said he wants to study storyboarding so he can try that next.
Director Shunji Oga (Golgo 13, Romance of the Three Kingdoms) leads Studio Cab, which handles the animation. Oga said the plan is to fold the manga's world into an original story for The Over Order and bring the characters' drama to the screen. He also singled out the feelings packed into Bolt's trademark "..." pauses as the key to unlocking the story.
Character designer Satoshi Hirayama (Lupin III series) said his goal was to reproduce the manga's delicate linework while cleaning up the lines enough that animators can draw the characters comfortably.
The Teaser and the Visual
The teaser trailer opens with an on-screen message addressed to everyone who loves the Heisei era, the Japanese era that ran from 1989 to 2019 and produced the original manga and anime. Bolt picks up a loose screw in a wasteland and quietly says, "Time to work." The metal-eating scene that defines the franchise follows, and a giant weapon appears with the single word "Complete." The footage is new material from the production in progress.
The teaser visual, drawn by Yoshitomi, shows a long-haired Bolt in his signature coat, carrying an oversized weapon, with machine wreckage piled at his feet and rows of structures stretching to the horizon. The announcement describes the setting as a world where civilization's rise and decline sit side by side.
Looking Ahead
No air date, network or episode count has been announced, and there is no word on international streaming. The official site is live along with X, Instagram and TikTok accounts, so watch there for further staff and cast reveals.
Catching up on the earlier anime is easier than it used to be. The 1997 TV series ran 12 episodes on TV Tokyo, produced at Studio Deen and directed by Koichi Mashimo, with Aya Hisakawa as Bolt's opportunistic partner Kyurene. According to Anime News Network, Crunchyroll began streaming both that series and Eat-Man '98 in 2019, and Discotek Media released both on DVD. Viz Media published part of the original manga in North America years ago, and Yoshitomi's sequel manga Eat-Man The Main Dish ran in Kodansha's Monthly Shonen Sirius from 2014 to 2019.
