A Kamehameha Opens the New Footage
The new trailer starts with a Kamehameha and cuts between Goku and Beerus, the God of Destruction whose awakening sets the story in motion. Frieza shows up as well, and the footage introduces new enemies and characters who hold keys to the plot, according to a report from Japanese entertainment outlet Oricon carried on Yahoo! News Japan.
The key visual released alongside it pairs a smirking Beerus, Earth resting in his palm, with a sharp-eyed Goku staring him down. A new, unnamed threat targeting Earth appears in the artwork alongside Frieza; the announcement stops short of identifying it.
One Piece Hands Over Its Late-Night Slot
Dragon Ball Super: Beerus airs Sundays at 11:15 p.m. on Fuji TV's national network starting October 11. One Piece currently occupies that time slot, and per the announcement, the slot's programming changes over in October.
In Japan, each episode streams 30 minutes after the broadcast ends, at 12:15 a.m., with Prime Video and the Japanese streaming service U-NEXT getting it first. Other streaming platforms in Japan follow every Thursday at 12:15 a.m.
What "Enhanced" Actually Means
Toei Animation is producing the series as an "enhanced" edition of Dragon Ball Super, the TV anime that ran from 2015 to 2018 based on an original concept by Akira Toriyama. In practice that means a large volume of new and redrawn animation, a reconstructed story, and refreshed visuals, sound and editing, with the stated goals of more immersive battle scenes and a more precise recreation of the manga. Matsuto Seya directs, with Tadayoshi Yamamuro on character design and Norihito Sumitomo composing the music, per the official English Dragon Ball site. Toriyama is credited for original work, story and character design.
The story picks up a few years after the fight against Majin Buu, with Earth enjoying a brief stretch of peace. Beerus, a being powerful enough to destroy entire planets, wakes from a long sleep, and even the Kais and Supreme Kais watch his return with dread. When he hears rumors of the Saiyan who defeated Frieza, he suddenly appears before Goku, and Earth faces annihilation.
The original Dragon Ball manga ran in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump from 1984 for roughly ten and a half years, and its collected volumes have passed 260 million copies worldwide. The franchise's recent output includes the 2022 film Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero and the TV series Dragon Ball DAIMA, which aired from October 2024 to February 2025.
Two Theme Artists Who Grew Up on the Series
Singer MEGATERA ZERO performs the opening theme "ONOGAMI." He said he has watched Dragon Ball since childhood and wrote the song about characters who fight trusting only in themselves, enemies included. The title plays on onoga mi, roughly "one's own self."
The ending theme is "Kanpeki no Peki" by Vickeblanka (also known as VK Blanka), who sang Black Clover's third opening "Black Rover." The title riffs on kanpeki, the Japanese word for "perfect." He described flipping through the manga as a kid and waking up early every week for the anime, and said the song draws on the strength and courage the series is known for, along with the sadness and absurdity that always sat in its shadow.
Looking Ahead
The first episode screens early at New York Comic Con on October 8, three days before the Japanese premiere. International streaming has not been announced; the Prime Video and U-NEXT windows confirmed so far apply to Japan only. Elsewhere in the franchise, a separate new series, Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol, is in production with no date attached yet. The Dragon Ball manga is available in English from Viz Media.
