Hideki Takeuchi Brings the Webtoon Brawler to Live Action
Viral Hit, known in Japan as Kenka Dokugaku (喧嘩独学), adapts T.Jun's massively popular webtoon about Shimura Kōta, a high school student stuck at the absolute bottom of the social ladder. His way out? Live-streaming fights for money. The premise fits Netflix's global audience, and the streamer is betting on it with a worldwide exclusive.
Directing the adaptation is Hideki Takeuchi (Thermae Romae, Fly Me to the Saitama), a director with a proven manga-to-live-action track record. Japanese entertainment news site Comic Natalie reported that the roughly four-minute opening footage sets the tone immediately: a cryptic video message declares "if you get strong, the world will change," before cutting to Shimura forced onto a classmate's live stream in white face paint. "This is my fun school life," he deadpans. The underdog energy the webtoon is known for comes through immediately.
The character relationship chart released alongside the footage maps out the web of personalities surrounding Shimura, including Aki, Kanegon, and Kaho, the core group whose tangled dynamics drive the story.
The Cast Behind the Fights
Suzuka Ōji (鈴鹿央士), who led Netflix's own From Me to You adaptation, plays Shimura Kōta. He is joined by Mikami Ai (見上愛), Sugō Araki (菅生新樹), who plays the scene-stealing Kanegon, and model-turned-actress Nukumi Meru (生見愛瑠) as Kaho.
The supporting cast runs deep. Hamao Noritaka, Asakawa Nana, Maeda Kentarō, and Nagata Takurō fill out the high school ranks, while veterans Kataoka Tsurutarō and Harada Mieko anchor the adult side. Sekiguchi Mendy, Iseyama Yūsuke, and Sano Gaku round out the ensemble.
Takeuchi praised the cast's chemistry. In comments to Comic Natalie, the director recalled that the four-month shoot built a genuine bond among the actors: "It's a youth story with action woven in, so the intensity builds, and everyone starts looking out for each other. The unity just keeps growing. I was watching it all from a teacher's perspective, thinking, 'That's a good team right there.'" He also revealed the cast held monthly barbecues on the school set, with Suzuka supplying seafood and Takeuchi himself bringing the meat. "Suzuka and Sugō spent entire sessions just making takoyaki. Since we were shooting at a school, the whole thing looked exactly like a school festival."
Watch Party and Hashtag Campaign
To celebrate the premiere, a watch party streams at 8:00 PM JST on June 11 featuring Suzuka, Mikami, Sugō, Nukumi, Hamao, Asakawa, Nagata, and Enohara Ina. Fans can watch Episode 1 alongside the cast, with a special guest appearance and exclusive cast "showdowns" promised. Netflix is also running a hashtag campaign: post your reactions on X with #喧嘩独学 for a chance to win original merchandise.
Looking Ahead
Viral Hit is now streaming on Netflix worldwide, so international fans can jump in from day one. The original webtoon by T.Jun (PTJ cartoon company), illustrated by Kim Jung-hyun, is serialized on LINE Manga in Japan and available internationally through Webtoon under the titles Viral Hit and How to Fight. No episode count has been confirmed, but with Takeuchi at the helm and Netflix distributing globally, this is one of the platform's bigger bets on a webtoon-to-live-action pipeline that has been gaining momentum since the success of shows like All of Us Are Dead and The Sound of Magic.
