Steam Joins the Platform Roster

Yostar's hit free-to-play mahjong game Mahjong Soul (雀魂-じゃんたま-) is heading to Steam in Japan. Famitsu reported on May 22 that the game's Japanese-language Steam store page is now live, though the release date is simply listed as "to be announced."

Developed by Cat Food Studio with Yostar handling Japanese operations, Mahjong Soul has carved out a sizable niche in the online mahjong space. The game supports both three-player and four-player Japanese mahjong, and its flashy riichi and ron call-in animations have become a signature draw. Limited-time events also introduce special rule variants to keep matches fresh.

Anime Collabs Keep It Trending

Part of what sets Mahjong Soul apart from traditional mahjong clients is its steady stream of crossover events. The game has run collaborations with Blue Archive, Sword Art Online, and the Fate franchise, among others — tie-ins that regularly push the game into trending topics on Japanese social media.

These collaborations bring themed characters into the game's roster alongside its original cast, giving players cosmetic variety at the mahjong table while pulling in fans from outside the core mahjong audience.

What's Available Now

As of May 22, 2026, the Japanese version of Mahjong Soul is playable on iOS, Android, browser, and a dedicated Windows launcher. The Steam release will add a fifth platform option for Japanese players, per Famitsu's report.

Looking Ahead

No specific release date has been set for the Steam version in Japan. The store page is live now, so players can wishlist the game while waiting for Yostar to announce timing. Mahjong Soul is already available on Steam in other regions under its global English client — the new page specifically targets the Japanese domestic market with the Japanese-language version. The game remains free-to-play across all platforms.
