Mariya Ise Joins the Cast as the Boy Who Holds the Key
Mariya Ise (Killua Zoldyck in Hunter x Hunter, Levy McGarden in Fairy Tail) voices Mu Qing (沐清), a boy the announcement describes as holding the key to the story. The English spelling of his name hasn't been confirmed yet; in Japanese it reads "Mūchin."
The teaser visual places Mu Qing deep inside a cave with Maomao and Jinshi, a long way from the palace corridors where this series usually operates. Maomao's torch lights up a stash of treasure, and the artwork carries a tagline that translates roughly to "that mystery leads to a hidden treasure." As Japanese anime news site Anime Hack notes, the visual swaps the glamour of the imperial court for a far more dangerous mood.
Alongside the teaser, new visuals show Maomao and Jinshi in their costumes for the film.
A Consort's Body, Untouched After Five Years
Series creator Natsu Hyuuga wrote a completely new story for the film, and the announcement bills it as the biggest mystery in the series' history: the secret of a corpse tangled up with a hidden treasure. The subtitle Bōhi no Hihō translates roughly to "the late consort's hidden treasure," and no official English title has been announced yet.
The setup goes like this. The Emperor orders Jinshi to grant the last wish of a consort who died in the rear palace five years earlier: to return to her homeland. When her body is examined, it looks as beautiful as if she were still alive. To get to the bottom of it, Jinshi brings Maomao on a journey to 未南州, a lively city built on the water in the south, ruled by the Mi (未) clan. Official romanizations for the region and the clan haven't been released, so those names may change in English materials. The synopsis promises the situation develops far beyond anything the pair imagined.
The trailer covers the first leg of that trip. Maomao arrives in the water city thrilled by medicines and plants she has never seen, then runs straight into the mystery of the consort's body. The footage also reveals water pirates rampaging through the region and a hidden treasure, along with glimpses of new characters.
The Apothecary Diaries adapts Natsu Hyuuga's mystery novels, a series with more than 45 million copies in circulation. Aoi Yūki voices Maomao, an apothecary's daughter obsessed with poisons and medicine, and Takeo Ōtsuka plays Jinshi, the strikingly handsome eunuch. Together they tackle the difficult cases that crop up inside the imperial court.
The TV Team Returns at TOHO animation STUDIO
The film keeps the television staff intact. Norihiro Naganuma directs, Yuko Kakihara handles the screenplay, and Yukiko Nakatani serves as character designer and chief animation director. The music comes from the trio of Satoru Kōsaki, Kevin Penkin, and Alisa Okehazama, with animation production at TOHO animation STUDIO.
The timeline so far: Season 1 aired in 2023, Season 2 ran from January to July 2025, and Season 3 and the film were both announced in October 2025. The full trailer is streaming now on TOHO animation's YouTube channel.
