Subaru Starts From Zero — Again

The Episode 8 preview released by Dengeki Online paints a disorienting picture: Subaru, last seen navigating the Pleiades Watchtower's deadly trials alongside his companions, now stares at the fantasy world like he's seeing it for the first time. That's because, as far as he's concerned, he is.

According to the synopsis, Subaru believes he was just walking home from a convenience store when he was suddenly pulled into another world. Everything that happened after his original summoning — every death, every loop, every hard-won relationship — is gone. His companions tell him they're in the middle of a "test" at a tower, but Subaru has no special powers and no frame of reference. He's placed on standby while everyone else figures out what to do with him.

Then he starts wandering the tower on his own.

The episode title, "Omae wa Dare da" (Who Are You?), works on multiple levels. It's the question Subaru's allies are asking about this version of him — and possibly the question he's asking himself.

What We Know About the Episode

Episode 8 is the 74th episode overall in the WHITE FOX (Steins;Gate, Akame ga Kill!) adaptation of Tappei Nagatsuki's light novel series, published under KADOKAWA's MF Bunko J imprint. Yoshiko Nakamura handles the script, with Shinji Itadaki on storyboards and Hinako Masaki directing.

The episode also comes with a companion mini anime — Episode 74 of Re:Zero Break Time, titled "Kararagi Hosode Hanjōki." In it, Eridona and Julius walk through the watchtower's corridors in a heavy atmosphere, and Eridona recalls the day she first met Anastasia. It's a quieter character beat that runs parallel to the main episode's memory-loss drama.

The Season 4 cast remains locked in for the Watchtower arc: Yūsuke Kobayashi as Subaru, Rie Takahashi as Emilia, Inori Minase as Rem, Takuya Eguchi as Julius, Fairouz Ai as Shaula, and Tomokazu Sugita as Reid Astrea, among others. Masahiro Shinohara continues as series director with Masahiro Yokotani on series composition.

Why This Episode Matters

Memory loss in Re:Zero isn't a gimmick — it's a loaded gun. The entire show is built on Subaru accumulating knowledge through repeated deaths, then using that knowledge to push forward. Strip that away and you don't just reset the character; you reset the power dynamic of every scene he's in. His allies have to decide how much to tell him. His enemies may not even realize anything has changed.

The "Loss" arc title takes on sharper meaning here. Seven episodes in, the show has been building toward a crisis point at the Pleiades Watchtower, and Subaru losing his memories appears to be that breaking point. With only three episodes left in the first cour before the series takes a break ahead of the "Recapture" arc in August, the stakes are accelerating fast.

Looking Ahead

Re:ZERO Season 4's "Loss" arc runs 11 episodes total, meaning Episode 8 leaves just three more before the mid-season break. The second cour, titled the "Recapture" arc, begins August 12, 2026 with eight episodes.

New episodes air Wednesdays on TOKYO MX and AT-X across 21 stations in Japan, with ABEMA and d Anime Store offering same-day streaming at 10:30 PM JST. Internationally, Crunchyroll streams the series with subtitles and an English dub across North America, Europe, Latin America, and most other regions.

The opening theme "Recollect" by Konomi Suzuki featuring Ashnikko and the ending theme "Ender Ember" by MYTH & ROID featuring TK from Ling Tosite Sigure continue through this cour. Nagatsuki's original light novel series is published in English by Yen Press for readers looking to get ahead of the anime.
