A Figure Franchise Takes the Next Step
Heavily Armed High School Girls (重兵装型女子高生) started as a series of illustrations by artist neco depicting schoolgirls carrying absurdly oversized weaponry. The concept caught fire in the figure community, spawning multiple figma and PLAMAX model kits from Max Factory and Good Smile Company that sold well both in Japan and overseas. Now the franchise is making the jump to animation, with Good Smile Film and Good Smile Company co-producing a TV anime announced by manga and anime news site Comic Natalie on June 5.
Masaki Tachibana (Princess Principal, Barakamon) directs. The announcement marks a reunion between Tachibana and series composition writer Natsuko Takahashi, who previously collaborated on Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 and the "Yuko's Treasure" segment of Star Wars: Visions Volume 3.
What We Know So Far
The teaser PV, released on the Good Smile Channel on YouTube, shows a mysterious girl staring at a distant sky before cutting to the franchise's signature character Ichi (壱), a high school student carrying multiple swords. A newly drawn key visual by neco also features Ichi in her iconic multi-blade silhouette.
No voice cast has been announced. The broadcast is confirmed for 2027, though a specific season has not been revealed.
The Creative Team Speaks
neco, who created the original concept, described the anime adaptation as a personal dream realized. "There's nothing that makes an illustrator happier than seeing their work become an anime," neco wrote, adding that the project grew from "a single illustration into figures, and now into anime."
Director Tachibana noted that he worked closely with neco during script development: "We'd ask, 'What kind of personality do you think this character has?' and build the scripts from neco's input." He added that hearing the characters voiced for the first time brought "new discoveries" for both himself and the creator.
Takahashi highlighted the contrast at the franchise's core. "These girls carry armaments that are heavy in every sense of the word, yet they still have the bright smiles of high school students," she wrote. "I hope viewers will enjoy that contrast."
Looking Ahead
The 2027 broadcast window is the only confirmed timeline. No streaming partners have been announced for international markets, and no English-language distributor has been revealed. Given Good Smile Company's strong international retail presence and the franchise's existing overseas fanbase through figure sales, a simultaneous global release seems plausible, though nothing is confirmed.
