Bokuto Finally Gets His Own Match

The bigger surprise of the two reveals is how much new footage the special anime is already showing. According to the Japanese entertainment outlet Oricon News, Haikyu!! The Place Where Monsters Go (ハイキュー!! バケモノたちの行くところ) released an action promotional video (PV) built from new animation, alongside a teaser visual and a school visual. The PV shows Bokuto and Kiryū hammering spikes at each other with neither side giving ground, and the teaser visual puts the two aces in front of their schools' banners.

The special covers Fukurōdani Academy against powerhouse Mujinazaka High in the Spring Nationals quarterfinals, a matchup the manga mostly kept off the page. For Bokuto fans, this is the payoff: a full broadcast built around his team's biggest game. The special is headed for TV in Japan rather than theaters, and the new PV is up now on TOHO animation's YouTube channel.

The Little Giant Showdown Gets Its First Real Look

On the movie side, Haikyu!! VS The Little Giant (劇場版ハイキュー!! VS 小さな巨人) revealed a new visual of Hinata and Hoshiumi staring each other down. The film adapts Karasuno's quarterfinal against Kamomedai, the game that finally pits Hinata against the small-statured ace who carries the "Little Giant" mantle he grew up idolizing. In the series' timeline, this match and the Fukurōdani game run at the same time, which makes the two projects a matched set rather than separate spin-offs.

Susumu Mitsunaka returns to write and direct at Production I.G, the studio behind all four Haikyu!! TV seasons and the 2024 film Haikyu!! The Dumpster Battle. Both new projects were first announced in December 2025, and this is the first substantial look at either since then.

The reveals landed on August 19, which fans celebrate as Haikyu Day because the digits 8-1-9 can be read as "ha-i-kyū" in Japanese.

Looking Ahead

Both projects are dated 2027 in Japan, with the film in theaters and the special on TV. Nothing more specific than the year has been announced, and the action PV's tagline promises only that the match starts in 2027.

International distribution has not been announced for either project yet. While fans wait, Haruichi Furudate's original manga is complete and fully available in English from Viz Media at 45 volumes, so the Kamomedai and Mujinazaka matches are already on the page for readers who want to get ahead of the anime.
