Ichikawa-Designed Goods Lead the Merch Lineup

The first merchandise wave for Monthly Afternoon's inaugural large-scale exhibition leans heavily on the magazine's modern crown jewel. Haruko Ichikawa personally designed a clear file set and acrylic mirror featuring her Land of the Lustrous characters — a notable touch given Ichikawa's famously selective approach to promotional material.

Rounding out the lineup: a manga-volume-style memo pad for Tsurumaikada's Medalist (the figure skating hit currently airing as an anime), masking tape scattered with Masayuki Ishikawa's iconic microbe characters from Moyashimon+, magnet sheets featuring Gunsmith Cats and Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou, P3 Charafine art boards for series including Vinland Saga and Oh My Goddess!, and reproduction manuscript sets for Big Windup! and Heavenly Delusion.

Immersive Displays Bring Classic Scenes to Life

Beyond original artwork on the walls, the exhibition will feature full-scale recreations and photo spots drawn from Afternoon's four-decade catalog.

The standout pieces announced so far:

  • Oh My Goddess! — A "Three Goddesses Descending" life-size standee featuring Belldandy, Urd, and Skuld from Kosuke Fujishima's beloved supernatural comedy.
  • Genshiken — A standee recreating the third-year club members from Shimoku Kio's otaku-life series.
  • Knights of Sidonia — A scene-recreation diorama of the Tsugumori mecha and Tsumugi from Tsutomu Nihei's sci-fi epic.

Additional displays include a gem-character sculpture panel from Land of the Lustrous, a "Completion" standee panel from Medalist, and 3D mascot figures of Moyashimon+'s microbes.

A Staggering Roster of 40 Years' Worth of Manga

The exhibition's participating works list reads like a syllabus for a course on seinen manga excellence. The confirmed lineup includes over 80 titles spanning Afternoon's full history — from founding-era classics like Parasyte (Hitoshi Iwaaki) and Blade of the Immortal (Hiroaki Samura), through mid-era gems like Mushishi (Yuki Urushibara) and BLAME! (Tsutomu Nihei), to current serializations like Skip and Loafer (Misaki Takamatsu) and Blue Period (Tsubasa Yamaguchi).

Other highlights on the roster: Vinland Saga (Makoto Yukimura), Historie (Hitoshi Iwaaki), EDEN (Hiroki Endo), Darwin's Incident (Shun Umezawa), Heavenly Delusion (Masakazu Ishiguro), and Wave, Listen to Me! (Hiroaki Samura). The breadth covers sci-fi, slice-of-life, historical epic, sports drama, and art-school coming-of-age — essentially the full spectrum of what made Afternoon the magazine of choice for mangaka who wanted creative freedom.

Looking Ahead

The Afternoon 40th Anniversary Exhibition runs July 10-26, 2026, at Sunshine City in Tokyo's Ikebukuro district. Tickets are paid admission; pricing details and a goods-inclusive ticket tier were previously announced alongside premium foil-stamped panel bonuses.

This is billed as the first merchandise wave, with additional goods expected before the exhibition opens. For international fans unable to attend in person, no online merchandise sales have been announced — though Kodansha's recent track record with global pop-up shops suggests international availability isn't out of the question. Several of the featured series have strong English-language presences: Kodansha USA publishes Land of the Lustrous, Vinland Saga, Skip and Loafer, Blue Period, and Heavenly Delusion, while Parasyte and Blade of the Immortal are available through Kodansha's back catalog.
