Three Proposals, Three Genres

June 7 is Proposal Day in Japan, and streaming service ABEMA picked three anime that nail the moment in wildly different ways. The selections span rom-com, action, and spy comedy, but each builds its proposal scene into a genuine turning point.

Anime Anime reported that ABEMA's three picks are The Quintessential Quintuplets, Sword Art Online, and SPY x FAMILY, all currently streaming on the platform in Japan.

The Quintessential Quintuplets: Choosing One of Five

Negi Haruba's rom-com, originally serialized in Kodansha's Weekly Shonen Magazine, follows high schooler Futaro Uesugi as he tutors the five Nakano sisters. The entire series builds toward one question: which sister does Futaro choose? After a long arc of shifting loyalties and near-misses, his eventual proposal pays off that tension. The scene captures a bond nurtured over a long time finally bearing fruit.

Sword Art Online: A Proposal in a Death Game

Reki Kawahara's light novel series, published under Kadokawa's Dengeki Bunko imprint, throws its protagonist Kirito into a VR game where death is permanent. The stakes make Episode 10's proposal to Asuna land harder than any peacetime confession could. With both characters fighting for survival, Kirito's decision to express his feelings becomes one of the franchise's most celebrated moments, widely regarded as a standout scene in the entire series.

SPY x FAMILY: A Grenade Pin for a Ring

Tatsuya Endo's ongoing manga in Shueisha's Shonen Jump+ takes a different approach entirely. Master spy Loid Forger needs a wife for his cover identity, and in Episode 2 he proposes to assassin Yor Briar by offering a grenade pin as an improvised ring. The scene works because it's simultaneously absurd and genuinely romantic. Two dangerous people, both hiding their real identities, stumble into a fake marriage that keeps surprising them with real emotion. The moment left a strong impression on viewers for its mix of shock and romance.

Looking Ahead

All three series are streaming on ABEMA, which is a Japan-based service with limited availability outside the country. For international viewers, each title is widely accessible elsewhere. The Quintessential Quintuplets and Sword Art Online are available on Crunchyroll, while SPY x FAMILY streams on both Crunchyroll and Netflix in most regions. The Quintessential Quintuplets also has a theatrical film available on Crunchyroll, and SPY x FAMILY Season 3 has been announced. All three manga/novel sources are published in English: The Quintessential Quintuplets and Sword Art Online through Yen Press, and SPY x FAMILY through Viz Media.
