What the Trailer Reveals

The trailer centers on the relationship between protagonist Kumiko Oumae and her rival Mayu Kuroe. According to a report by Japanese gaming and entertainment site Famitsu, the footage depicts both characters wrestling with their ideals as they approach their "final performance." The trailer conveys Kitauji High School Concert Band's collective resolve to claim gold at the national competition.

New cuts include Mayu in tears, high-energy performance sequences, cultural festival scenes, and a quiet shot of characters holding graduation certificates while looking up at the sky. For a series that Kyoto Animation (Violet Evergarden, A Silent Voice) has nurtured for over a decade, the footage makes clear Part 2 is designed as a proper sendoff.

11 Years in the Making

Sound! Euphonium began as a novel series by Ayano Takeda, published by Takarajimasha. Kyoto Animation's anime adaptation launched in 2015, and the franchise has since expanded across three TV seasons and multiple films. Season 3 aired in 2024 and delivered the story's emotional conclusion on television.

The Final Movie reworks that final season into a two-part theatrical format. Kyoto Animation has brushed up existing animation, added new scenes written by screenwriter Jukki Hanada, and included performance sequences that the TV broadcast never depicted. Chief director Tatsuya Ishihara (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Clannad) has led the production team across the full series run, with Taichi Ogawa directing.

Part 1 opened on April 24, 2026 and debuted at number four at the Japanese box office, earning approximately 125.8 million yen (roughly $783,000) in its opening weekend.

Soundtrack and Theme Song

The original soundtrack for Part 2 releases on September 11, the same day as the film. Composed by longtime series musician Akito Matsuda, it includes the score, concert band performance pieces featured in the film, and the theme song "ReCoda (The Final Movie Ver.)" performed by TRUE with Kitauji High School Concert Band.

The theme is a newly arranged and re-recorded version, with Matsuda arranging. Lyrics are by Miho Karasawa, with composition by Kazuki Tomita and hisakuni of SUPA LOVE.

Two editions are available: a limited edition (7,150 yen including tax) with a canvas-board-style EP-size jacket, and a standard edition (3,850 yen). Both are two-disc sets featuring illustration jackets drawn specifically for this release.

Final Key Visual and Advance Tickets

The newly revealed final key visual carries the tagline "And now, the final piece begins" and depicts the series' main characters walking together in the same direction. The visual incorporates references to the changing seasons and the cycle of the school year.

A second wave of advance tickets has also been announced, featuring original illustrations of ten main characters wearing glasses in a "Kitauji Glasses Collection" design. These are sold in pairs, with buyers choosing their preferred combination. Each pair comes with a "Tuba-kun Movieticket Sleeve 2," and an online-exclusive complete set of all ten cards includes a special accordion-style album.

Looking Ahead

Sound! Euphonium, The Final Movie Part 2 opens on September 11, 2026 across approximately 200 theaters in Japan, distributed by Shochiku. Part 1 is still playing in Japanese theaters.

For international fans, the TV series (including Season 3) streams on Crunchyroll across North America, Europe, Oceania, and other regions. No international theatrical distributor for The Final Movie has been announced yet. The source novel by Ayano Takeda has only its first volume available in English through Yen Press, with no further volumes currently scheduled.

The returning cast includes Tomoyo Kurosawa as Kumiko, Chika Anzai as Reina Kousaka, Haruka Tomatsu as Mayu Kuroe, Sora Amamiya as Kanade Hisaishi, and Takahiro Sakurai as advisor Noboru Taki, among many others from the full ensemble.
