Five Fronts, and Ram on Borrowed Strength
Subaru's plan splits the party across five problems happening at once, and episode 84 cuts between all of them. Julius takes Reid Astrea one-on-one and wins with Anastasia watching. Emilia reaches the tower's first layer, Maia, by herself and comes face to face with the divine dragon Volcanica. Subaru, Beatrice and Meili deal with a demon beast stampede and a scorpion-form Shaula. Ram takes on Lye Batenkaitos on the spiral staircase.
Ram's assignment is the one that should not work on paper. Her oni horn broke when she was a child, and most of the power that had people calling her a prodigy went with it. Episode 84 finally shows the workaround. Subaru's newly acquired Cor Leonis authority is propping her up, routing the damage she takes onto him instead, and that is enough for her to trade blows evenly with a Sin Archbishop while her clairvoyance keeps her a step ahead.
She is not polite about it, either. "How about it? Any regrets?" she keeps asking, and Japanese anime news site Anime Anime's reaction roundup describes real menace behind the line. Ram has no intention of forgiving the Sin Archbishop of Gluttony who tore her bond with her sister apart, and she wants him buried along with the humiliation.
A Broken Staff, a Restored Horn
Lye can transform into anyone he has devoured, which gives him a rotating set of borrowed skills. He uses it to back Ram into a corner. Once her link to Subaru cuts out, she goes down fast.
The turn comes from the staff Roswaal gave her. It breaks, exposing a fragment of Ram's horn that had been sealed inside. Her full power returns, temporarily, and she puts Lye on the floor with one hit.
That hit is what the reaction posts fixated on. "Sis!! The horn is growing!!" "So the horn was sealed in the staff??" "Horn revival." It is the first time the series has animated Ram at full strength, and viewers quoted in the roundup piled on: "Sis with a horn is seriously strong," "She's this strong?", "The animation is godlike," "Way too cool." Anime Anime's own word for it is 鬼がかった, a pun on 神がかった ("divinely inspired") that swaps the 神 (god) for the 鬼 (oni) of her heritage.
Lye Wears Rem's Face
Before the reversal, Lye reaches for Rem's form as a psychological weapon. That puts Inori Minase (Chino in Is the Order a Rabbit?, Hestia in Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?), who has voiced Rem since the series began, in the strange position of playing Rem filtered through Lye. "It's been a while since I really felt Inori Minase," one viewer wrote.
The episode then fills in the other half of a flashback the series has been sitting on. On the day Ram's horn broke, Rem thought "it finally broke," and the guilt from that turned into the fierce attachment she has carried ever since. What episode 84 adds is Ram's side, which had never been shown: she could not stand that her own power made her sister feel small. The bitter part is that Rem's face from that moment is among what Lye and his fellow Sin Archbishops of Gluttony ate.
So when Lye keeps borrowing Rem's words to taunt Ram even at that point, the roundup catches the mood in one comment: "You're still going to insult Ram after coming this far?" Ram gives him nothing. He runs, she follows, he begs, and she finishes him without hesitating. Rem and Patrasche, both marked as his targets, come out safe. Rie Murakawa (Hotaru Ichijō in Non Non Biyori, Anzu in Hinamatsuri) gets the payoff on a role she has played since 2016 without ever getting to play Ram at full power.
Looking Ahead
Episode 85 airs Wednesday, September 30 in Japan as a 45-minute extended finale, closing out the Recapture Arc and season 4 as a whole. The season ran as the 11-episode Loss Arc from April 8 across 21 stations nationwide including TOKYO MX and AT-X, then the 8-episode Recapture Arc from August 12.
Two threads are still open going in. Emilia is alone in front of Volcanica, and Meili took a giant scorpion's stinger through the abdomen moments after Subaru offered to take her in. Episode 84 leaves both hanging.
Crunchyroll streams the season outside Japan on a weekly Wednesday schedule, so the extended finale lands internationally the same day. Tappei Nagatsuki's light novels, illustrated by Shinichiro Otsuka, are published in English by Yen Press.
