A New Look at an Old Beginning
The newly released episode art for The One Piece captures exactly what you'd want from a modernized take on Eiichiro Oda's pirate epic: Monkey D. Luffy bursting onto the waves, spray flying, practically shouting his trademark declaration through the frame. It's a simple image, but it signals that Wit Studio (Spy x Family, Attack on Titan seasons 1-3) isn't just polishing the original Toei animation. This is a ground-up reimagining.
Oricon News first shared the artwork alongside a refresher on the project's scope. Season 1 adapts the first 50 chapters of Oda's manga across seven episodes, tracing Luffy's journey from his earliest days as a would-be pirate through to his arrival at the floating sea restaurant Baratie, where he meets the chain-smoking sous-chef Sanji. At roughly 300 minutes total, the season averages over 40 minutes per episode, a format closer to prestige TV than a weekly anime broadcast.
What Sets This Remake Apart
The One Piece isn't a remaster or a condensed clip show. It strips out the filler and pacing issues that bloated the original Toei Animation series and rebuilds the East Blue Saga from scratch. The remake is the on-ramp Oda's story has needed for years, a clean entry point for newcomers put off by the original's length.
The production team reflects how seriously Netflix and Shueisha are treating the project. Director Masashi Koizuka helms the series, with Kyoji Asano and Takatoshi Honda handling character design. Taku Kishimoto, whose series composition credits include Haikyu!! and Ranking of Kings, is writing the scripts. That's a lineup built for both action spectacle and emotional storytelling.
All seven episodes will drop simultaneously, making Season 1 a single sitting for anyone with five hours and a strong Wi-Fi connection. It's a deliberate move: Netflix wants The One Piece to land as an event, not a slow weekly drip.
Looking Ahead
The One Piece premieres globally on Netflix in February 2027. With the first episode art now public, expect Netflix to ramp up marketing heading into One Piece Day in August 2026, which has historically served as the franchise's tentpole announcement event. No additional cast details have been confirmed for the remake yet, though the original series' voice cast remains a topic of intense fan speculation.
The source manga is widely available. Viz Media publishes the English edition, and chapters are free to read on Manga Plus. For newcomers eyeing the remake as their entry point, 50 chapters is a manageable preview before February rolls around.
