Spinoffs and Big Names Lead the Pack
A reader poll from Japanese anime news site Anime Anime asked a simple question: which completed manga should get an anime? The survey, open from May 27 to June 7, drew 205 responses split roughly 60/40 female-to-male, with about 30% of respondents under 19.
The completed-works category (a companion article covers ongoing series separately) turned up a mix of franchise spinoffs, veteran-mangaka deep cuts, and a strong showing from the villainess isekai genre.
Jujutsu Kaisen ≡ (Modulo), the three-volume spinoff set in 2086 where aliens called Simria have appeared on Earth, was a clear fan favorite. Readers pointed to the special promotional video MAPPA produced for the final volume's release as proof that a full adaptation could work. "The battle animation quality alone pulls you in," one respondent wrote, adding that the spinoff's compact length and returning characters like the Okkotsu siblings make it a natural fit for a limited series.
(Moto) Takagi-san, the sequel to Teasing Master Takagi-san that follows Nishikata and Takagi's married life and young daughter, also drew vocal support. Fans specifically requested the return of voice actors Yuki Kaji and Rie Takahashi. One reader noted the sequel has more collected volumes than the original.
Urasawa, Madoka, and the Action Picks
Naoki Urasawa's BILLY BAT, a historical suspense manga following manga artist Kevin Yamagata as he investigates the origins of his own creation, earned votes from readers who compared it favorably to the PLUTO streaming adaptation. "With YAWARA!, MASTER Keaton, and MONSTER all animated, BILLY BAT is the obvious next pick," one voter argued, calling for a streaming-first approach to handle the manga's dense, real-history narrative.
The Puella Magi Madoka Magica spinoff [Shin'yaku] Mahou Shoujo Oriko Magica: Sadness Prayer also received attention, with readers describing its storyline as darker and more violent than the original series. The timing is notable: the new Madoka Magica film, Walpurgis no Kaiten, is set to premiere on August 28, 2026, which could reignite interest in the broader franchise.
On the action side, martial arts series TOUGH (the sequel to Koukou Tekken-den Tough, which received an OVA but never a full TV adaptation), survival drama Jisatsutou, and historical swordfighting epic Azumi all picked up votes. Azumi, previously adapted as a live-action film, prompted one reader to recommend a web-exclusive anime to accommodate its graphic violence.
The Villainess Wave Reaches the Poll
The isekai and villainess subgenres, dominant in recent anime seasons, showed up in force among completed works too. Hanabi wa Samenai Yume wo Miru, where an executed duchess wakes up as a modern Japanese high school student, drew praise for its underdog narrative. Nokori Ichinichi de Hametsu Flag Zenbu Heshiorimasu, in which a noblewoman realizes she's a doomed villainess with exactly one day to rewrite her fate, won fans with its breakneck pacing.
The gourmet comedy Kizoku Reijou ga Junk Food Kutte "Umai Desu wa!" Suru Dake no Hanashi, about a noblewoman discovering the joys of cheap eats, got a mention too. One reader's pitch: cast voice actors who can hold their liquor, because they want a bonus feature of the cast visiting an izakaya.
Looking Ahead
The full multiple-vote list includes 19 titles ranging from Deadpool: SAMURAI to SOUL CATCHER(S) to Advance of Z: Under the Flag of Titans. Whether any of these get greenlit is another question, but the poll offers a snapshot of what Japanese fans are hungry for.
For international readers, several of these titles are already available in English. BILLY BAT was published by Kodansha in Japan, and Jujutsu Kaisen ≡ (Modulo) is serialized under the Shueisha umbrella. Teasing Master Takagi-san and its sequel have English releases as well. The villainess titles skew toward digital-first platforms like Manga Plus and Shonen Jump+, where availability varies by region.
Anime Anime runs this poll twice a year. The previous edition, from December 2025, is archived on their site for anyone who wants to compare how the wishlist has shifted.
