Cooking Is Battle
Iron Wok Jan follows Akiyama Jan, a 16-year-old Chinese cooking prodigy whose core philosophy is that cooking is war. Where most cooking manga protagonists win through sincerity and devotion, Jan defeats his rivals through any method available, turning culinary showdowns into psychological warfare. The series is set around Gobancho Hanten, a Chinese restaurant in Tokyo's Ginza district, where Jan's approach puts him at odds with cooks who believe the kitchen runs on heart.
Creator Shinji Saijō (西条真二) serialized the manga in Akita Shoten's Weekly Shonen Champion from 1995 to 2000. The series has sold over 10 million copies. According to Gunma Prefecture's Jomo Shimbun newspaper, this marks the first anime adaptation of any of Saijō's works. The 64-year-old creator, from Midori City in Gunma, said he hopes many people enjoy the anime.
