Penelope's Survival Run Reaches Its Finale
The anime news doubles as a send-off. According to a report from Japanese entertainment news site Comic Natalie, the webtoon closed out its main story at chapter 214 on Piccoma, Kakao's manga and web-novel app, right as the TV adaptation was announced. Anime News Network notes the main story finished its Korean run on Kakao Page in July 2026, and that the creative team plans a spinoff after taking a break. So the finale is less a goodbye than a handoff.
For readers who haven't touched it, the setup is the genre at its most ruthless. The protagonist wakes up as Penelope Eckhart, the villainess of an otome game, and not just any playthrough but hard mode, where every route points toward her death. Her only way out is to do what the game demands: raise the affection of the love interests, one careful choice at a time, and dodge the death ending waiting at the finish line.
From Web Novel to Global Webtoon
The series started as a web novel by Korean author Gwon Gyeoeul before artist SUOL adapted it into the full-color vertical-scroll webtoon that made it a hit. In Japan it runs on Piccoma in two formats, a SMARTOON comic edition (Piccoma's label for vertical-scroll color comics) and a novel edition, with Kadokawa handling print volumes. Anime News Network reports the 12th Japanese volume arrives November 17.
English readers are already covered. The webtoon is serialized on Tapas under the official title Villains Are Destined to Die, and Ize Press publishes print editions. That existing English footprint matters here: the anime will arrive with an international fanbase that has been reading Penelope's story for years, the same runway that helped other Korean webtoon adaptations like Solo Leveling land big.
Piccoma Celebrates With Free Chapters and a Poster Giveaway
To mark the double milestone, Piccoma is running a free-reading campaign from August 9 through 15 in Japan. A "¥0+" ticket unlocks one eligible chapter, with more than 200 chapters of the comic edition and more than 160 chapters of the novel edition included. There is also a giveaway on the series' official X account: a B2-size poster featuring a newly drawn SUOL illustration, going to 10 winners.
Looking Ahead
Right now the anime is a title card and a promise. No studio, director, cast, or broadcast window has been announced, and Comic Natalie says further details will come in follow-up reports. International streaming plans haven't been mentioned either, which is normal at this stage for a project without a premiere date.
In the meantime, the complete main story is the draw. English readers can binge the webtoon on Tapas or pick up the Ize Press print volumes, and the planned spinoff means the source material isn't done growing before the anime shows up. The next thing to watch for is a staff and studio reveal, which is usually the step that turns an announcement into a real production.
