Episode 1 Puts Riliu and Jowy on the Wrong Side of the War
The premiere, titled "Hometown" (故郷), finds Riliu (リリュウ) and his best friend Jowy deployed with a Highland Kingdom youth brigade. It is supposed to be their last night in the field. The next day they head back to Kyaro, where their childhood friend Nanami is waiting for them. Instead, enemy soldiers ambush the unit in the mountains. Backed into a corner, the two boys promise each other they will meet again, then jump into a waterfall in the dark.
Riliu comes to inside a mercenary fortress belonging to the City-State alliance, the enemy army he had been fighting. He works in the fortress as a prisoner, and doubts about the Highland army begin to take hold. Were the youth soldiers led into a trap? And if they were, who set it? Jowy then turns up at the same fortress, having washed up in enemy territory himself. The two swear to return to Kyaro and get answers, and they escape. According to the episode 1 synopsis and preview stills published by Japanese entertainment site PASH! PLUS, a much bigger conspiracy is waiting past the fortress gates.
The synopsis landed alongside the show's third promotional video, which puts the story front and center rather than running down the cast list.
The Suikoden Game Fans Wanted Animated
Konami Digital Entertainment launched the Suikoden RPG series in 1995. The anime adapts Suikoden II, the 1998 PlayStation entry. PASH! PLUS calls it the title whose weighty, layered story fans had long hoped to see adapted. Its war is the Dunan Unification War, and its hero was a blank in the original game, a character players named themselves. The anime settles that question: he is Riliu, voiced by Toshiki Kumagai.
That is a lot of plot for one episode, which is what the 60-minute premiere is for. Suikoden II front-loads a great deal of story before the recruitment loop the series is known for even begins. The extended runtime gives episode 1 room to cover the ambush, the fortress and the escape in one sitting.
Cast and Staff
Kumagai leads as Riliu, with Shimba Tsuchiya as Jowy and Ayumi Hinohara as Nanami. The supporting cast covers the game's major players. Katsuyuki Konishi plays Viktor, and Yūichi Nakamura (Satoru Gojo in Jujutsu Kaisen, Hawks in My Hero Academia) plays Flik; the two are the mercenary pair returning from the first game. Taku Yashiro voices Luca Blight, with Chika Anzai as Jillia Blight and Jin Yamanoi as Agares Blight. Ayumu Murase is Luc, Megumi Han is Leknaat, Takeo Ōtsuka is Shu, Yoshino Aoyama is Apple, and Miyuki Sawashiro is Annabelle. Tsukino Chikasada voices Pilika and Akihiro Mine voices Rowd, two roles tied directly to the premiere's events.
Yūzō Satō directs, with Michihiro Tsuchiya on series composition, and KONAMI animation is handling production. Ryō Yamauchi designs the animation characters, working from original concepts by Konami's Shin Suzuki. The game character designs are by Konami's Fumi Ishikawa, who was lead illustrator on both Suikoden II and Suikoden III. Yoshikazu Iwanami is the sound director, and Kōji Nakamura is composing the score. NBCUniversal Entertainment Japan is credited with planning.
Nakamura also performs the ending theme, "closed eye sun (feat. Honoka Takahashi)." Takahashi fronts the rock band Regal Lily. amazarashi handles the opening theme, "Kanashimi Sae Otonabite." Both songs are out through Sony Music Labels.
Looking Ahead
The 60-minute first episode airs October 3, 2026 at 20:00 on TOKYO MX, with the rest of the 32-station rollout following. Episode 2 arrives October 13, and the series moves to a weekly Tuesday slot from there, running two straight seasons through March 2027.
Japanese streaming starts the same day as the broadcast across more than 20 services, including Amazon Prime Video, U-NEXT, ABEMA, Hulu, d Anime Store, Niconico, DMM TV and TVer. There is still no announced international streaming partner, so fans outside Japan have no confirmed legal way to watch.
The source material, at least, is easy to find in English. Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars came out worldwide on March 6, 2025 for Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC. Anyone who wants to know what Riliu and Jowy are walking into can start there.
