A First for the Matsuken Samba Star
Ken Matsudaira has been a fixture of Japanese entertainment since 1978, when he took the lead in the long-running samurai drama Abarenbo Shogun. In recent years he has reached a whole new generation through the enduring popularity of Matsuken Samba, his signature song-and-dance number. Voicing an animated version of himself, though, is a first even for him.
"I never imagined a character based on me would become an anime," Matsudaira said in a comment accompanying the announcement, admitting the offer caught him off guard before the idea won him over. He added that he hopes the series delivers energy and smiles to viewers.
In the show, Matsuken appears before people weighed down by moyamoya, the nagging little frustrations of daily life, and cheerfully "punishes" them alongside his partner dog Matsu-inu. The announcement, carried by Japanese entertainment news site Dengeki Online, pitches the series as comedy built on complaints everyone has felt at least once, aimed at viewers of all ages.
Sumire Uesaka Plays a Dog, Daisuke Namikawa Plays Everyone Else
Matsu-inu goes to Sumire Uesaka (Lum in Urusei Yatsura). The character is more than a mascot: Matsu-inu sniffs out the cause of each frustration and keeps Matsuken on track with the occasional biting quip. Uesaka said dog roles rarely come her way, describing Matsu-inu as expressive and lively. She also noted she grew up with Matsuken Samba and is excited to see its world drawn as an anime.
Daisuke Namikawa (Toru Oikawa in Haikyu!!, Goemon Ishikawa in Lupin III) rounds out the cast as, essentially, everyone else. Each episode puts a different set of characters in Matsuken's path, from office workers and bosses to shop clerks and friends, and Namikawa voices them all. He pointed out that every one of those characters carries a moyamoya of their own, and said he hopes viewers can sense each one's story even in brief scenes.
A Character IP Project, Not Just a Web Anime
Animation comes from Tatsunoko Production, which is also part of the committee behind the project. The plans go well beyond a YouTube series: Hakuhodo Products, the production company leading the project, describes Matsuken Anime as a character IP venture with merchandise, events, and promotional tie-ins to follow.
The project first surfaced in March, when a teaser trailer debuted at Tatsunoko Production's booth at the AnimeJapan convention in Tokyo. That teaser billed the series for a summer 2026 launch, and the new announcement locks in the date and, for the first time, the full voice cast.
Looking Ahead
Matsuken Anime begins streaming Saturday, August 29, 2026 on the official Matsuken Anime YouTube channel. Because it is a YouTube-first release, there is no TV broadcaster or regional streaming licensor standing between the show and international viewers, though nothing has been announced about English subtitles. The teaser trailer is already up on the official channel, and an official X account is posting updates.
Beyond the anime itself, Hakuhodo Products says merchandise, events, and promotions are on the roadmap, so the series premiere is meant as the first step in a larger Matsuken character brand, not the whole plan.
