A Giant Hamburg Steak, and Four Faces in the Window
In the anniversary art, Frieren, Fern and Stark are mid-celebration, and Frieren is hoisting what Japanese entertainment news site MANTANWEB calls a "ridiculously huge hamburg steak." Season 1 viewers will clock the reference immediately. In episode 12, "A Real Hero," Frieren cooks an oversized hamburg steak for Stark's 18th birthday, after Eisen explains that in his region the dish is what you serve a warrior who has earned it. Stark's older brother Stoltz used to cook one for him in secret.
Behind the trio, the window holds Himmel the hero, Heiter the priest, Eisen the warrior, and Frieren herself: the party that brought down the Demon King before the series opens. The whole premise runs on that group. Frieren is an elf, so she outlives her human companions, and their deaths send her back on the road, this time to actually understand people.
The Countdown Starts at One Year Out
Alongside the visual, the production launched a countdown illustration project for Season 3. The first entry is captioned "one year until broadcast," and Keisuke Kojima, one of the show's character designers, drew Frieren, Fern and Stark for it.
Both pieces debuted September 26 at TOHO Cinemas Hibiya in Tokyo's Chiyoda ward, at a Season 2 highlights screening that ran a specially programmed selection of episodes. Atsumi Tanezaki (Frieren), Kana Ichinose (Fern), Chiaki Kobayashi (Stark), Tarusuke Shingaki (Genau) and Reina Ueda (Methode) took the stage.
When the countdown art went up, Tanezaki and Ichinose performed its dialogue live. Ichinose, as Fern: "Lady Frieren, what is that grimoire?" Tanezaki, as Frieren: "It's the magic that makes Season 3 air one year from now."
What Season 3 Is Adapting
Season 3 carries the subtitle "Golden Land arc" and is set for October 2027. Madhouse (One-Punch Man, Death Note) stays on animation production, with Tomoya Kitagawa directing, Daiki Harashina as assistant director, and Keiichirō Saitō, who directed the first season, credited for director support. Tomohiro Suzuki handles series composition, Takasemaru and Kojima are on character design, and Evan Call returns for music. The arc puts Frieren's group up against Macht of the Golden Land, the last of the Seven Sages of Destruction.
On the manga side, Kanehito Yamada writes and Tsukasa Abe draws, with serialization running in Shogakukan's Weekly Shonen Sunday since April 2020. The series has over 35 million copies in print. Its awards include Manga Taisho 2021, the New Creator Prize at the 25th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize, the 69th Shogakukan Manga Award for 2023, and the shonen category at the 48th Kodansha Manga Award.
Season 1 ran from September 2023 to March 2024. Season 2 ran January to March 2026, so the wait for the Golden Land arc comes to roughly a year and a half, close to the gap between the first two seasons.
Looking Ahead
October 2027 is only a month; no specific premiere date has been announced. Crunchyroll streamed Season 2 worldwide outside of Asia and carried an English dub for the first season, though nothing has been confirmed for the Golden Land arc yet. Viz Media publishes the manga in English for readers who want to get ahead of the anime, and the Golden Land story starts from chapter 81 in volume 9. Until the first Season 3 trailer, the countdown project is what to watch, with more illustrations from the show's staff due as the broadcast month closes in.
