A Birthday Ambush Before Anyone Talked About the Show
Five voice actors walked onto the stage at TOHO Cinemas Hibiya in Tokyo on September 26, 2026, right after a specially programmed block of Season 2 episodes finished on the big screen. Then the event stopped for a minute. Atsumi Tanezaki (Anya Forger in Spy x Family), who voices Frieren, had a birthday the following day, and her castmates sprang a celebration on her.
They sang. Kana Ichinose, the voice of Fern, handed over a bouquet. Tanezaki said she hadn't imagined any of it and was genuinely startled. A florist who, as it turned out, was a Frieren fan had built the bouquet around blues and whites, and Tanezaki looked at it and said, "It's like being with Himmel."
Three Years, Nine Screens
The event ran under the name Anime 3rd Anniversary Season 2 Pickup Screening, and eight additional cinemas carried it as a live simulcast alongside the Hibiya venue, according to Anime Anime's report from the theater. Frieren's first episode aired in September 2023, putting the series at three years this month.
Tanezaki said a post from the anime's official X account got to her: it recalled the rush of seeing the opening air on television three years earlier. The post brought back her own nerves at the time, and the show's launch in Nippon TV's Friday Road Show movie slot. Ichinose described the stretch as a blur that somehow still felt like only three years, noting she has kept working on the series between broadcasts, including overseas events where the enthusiasm matched what she sees from Japanese fans. Chiaki Kobayashi, who plays Stark, pointed out that hundreds of anime get produced every year, and that keeping an audience attached to one of them at that pitch for three years is rare.
Madhouse (One-Punch Man, Death Note) also unveiled a third anniversary illustration at the screening, built around Frieren and her party celebrating with the absurdly oversized hamburg steak from Season 1. Tanezaki zeroed in on the window in the background, where the old hero party is reflected: Fern paired with Heiter, Stark with Eisen, and Himmel's counterpart left out of frame.
Revisiting Season 2 and the Revolte Arc
The panel then turned to the episodes screened that day, starting with the trio. Kobayashi picked episode 29, "Shall We Go, Then?", where Stark tucks Frieren and Fern under each arm to shield them, as the episode that told him the journey had restarted with these three. Ichinose went back to her long-standing favorite, the Fern and Stark date episodes 31 and 32 ("Somewhere She'd Like" and "Other People's Homes"), for the awkward pauses between the two. Tanezaki said the group's exchanges, in a pinch or in ordinary downtime, read like family to her.
Genau and Methode first appeared in Season 1's First-Class Mage Exam arc and moved to the center of the story in Season 2's Revolte arc. Tarusuke Shingaki, who voices Genau, said the first half of the series had drawn people's daily lives with real tenderness, and that the arc opens from those things being stripped away, so the loss had to carry weight for the affection to register at all. Reina Ueda, who voices Methode, said the atmosphere changed the moment their episodes began, and that she braced herself for something harsher.
Recording, by all three accounts, was calmer than the material. Tanezaki said the booth, Shinichiro Miki (Revolte) included, was quiet and easygoing in a way that ran against the story. Shingaki compared it to watching an actual adventuring party. Ueda said the mood in the booth felt natural.
The fight against Revolte and the demons splits into two groups: Frieren, Fern and Methode on one side, Stark and Genau on the other. Tanezaki said she couldn't get enough of Methode's lines and movements. Ichinose noted that Fern and Methode spend their downtime competing over Frieren, and that the battle has them putting their lives in each other's hands instead. Kobayashi singled out Stark taking a hit on purpose and Genau reading the intent instantly. Shingaki said the coordination didn't look like a first fight together.
Genau's standing with readers came up at the photo session. He took first place in the manga's third character popularity poll, held this spring. A panel of a newly drawn illustration by the manga's artist, Tsukasa Abe, went up on stage for a two-shot with Shingaki. Shingaki said he never expected that much support, and credited the size of the anime's audience.
A One-Year Countdown to the Golden Land Arc
Season 3 covers the Golden Land arc and airs from October 2027 on the Nippon TV network. Tanezaki said the brief glimpse of the Golden Land in Season 2's closing scene, paired with Evan Call's cue "The Golden Land," left her no choice but to steel herself a full year out. Ichinose called it a favorite arc among manga readers and admitted to nerves. Kobayashi, who said he is still guessing at the structure and casting like any other fan, described it as a story where slow and fast tempos cross, and the eras with them.
The countdown project announced at the event puts the show's own animators to work: new illustrations at the one-year mark, then at nine months, six months, three months, two months and one month before broadcast. The first came from Keisuke Kojima, one of the series' character designers. It went up on screen with dialogue written into the art, and Tanezaki, Ichinose and Kobayashi performed the lines live in front of the audience.
Looking Ahead
The next countdown illustration lands at the nine-month mark. The teaser visual already out for the arc shows Macht of the Golden Land, billed as the last and strongest of the Seven Sages of Destruction. The adaptation picks up from chapter 81, collected in volume 9 of the manga by Kanehito Yamada and Tsukasa Abe. English readers are well past that point: Viz Media has 14 volumes out, with volume 15 due December 8, 2026.
Crunchyroll holds streaming rights outside East Asia and carried Season 2 as it aired between January and March 2026, with an English dub following. Nothing has been announced yet about international release plans for Season 3, which is normal this far out from an October 2027 premiere.
