The IMAX Cut of Akaza Returns Gets an Encore
Both films come back in premium formats, according to Japanese anime news site Anime Anime. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba The Movie: Mugen Train screens in Grand Cinema Sunshine's BESTIA format with Dolby Atmos sound. Infinity Castle Chapter 1: Akaza Returns runs in the IMAX special edition that first screened in February 2026.
The window is tight. Each film is scheduled for just one showing per day across the seven-day run, Friday, August 21 through Thursday, August 27, 2026, and only at this single theater in Tokyo's Ikebukuro district.
A Theater and a Cafe Under One Roof
The screenings mark the opening of ufotable CHARACTERS Cafe IKEBUKURO, which launched on August 8, 2026, on the second floor of Grand Scape Ikebukuro, the same building that houses Grand Cinema Sunshine. The studio behind the Demon Slayer anime now has a themed cafe sitting right next to the theater screening its films.
There is a bonus for showing up. Everyone who attends gets a postcard featuring artwork from the cafe's goods lineup, handed out at random from five designs. The postcards are exclusive to this one-week run.
Why These Two Films
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba started as Koyoharu Gotouge's manga, published in 23 volumes under Shueisha's Jump Comics imprint with more than 220 million copies in circulation. The story follows Tanjiro Kamado, a boy whose family is slaughtered by demons. He joins the Demon Slayer Corps to turn his sister Nezuko, who survived the attack but became a demon herself, back into a human.
ufotable has produced the entire anime series since the TV run began in April 2019. The Infinity Castle films adapt the final showdown between the Demon Slayer Corps and the demons inside the Infinity Castle, the demons' stronghold, and are planned as a trilogy. Chapter 1: Akaza Returns opened in Japan on July 18, 2025 and reached US theaters on September 12, 2025.
The film also picked up awards attention. Per Anime Anime, it was the only Japanese work nominated in the animated film category at the 83rd Golden Globe Awards, though it did not take the prize.
Looking Ahead
International fans who can't make it to Ikebukuro have options at home. Infinity Castle arrived on Crunchyroll and digital platforms in the US on July 28, 2026, per the official English site. The complete 23-volume manga is available in English from Viz Media.
As for the rest of the trilogy, the Anime Anime report doesn't touch on timing for Chapters 2 and 3. In the meantime, the two films screen in Ikebukuro from August 21 to 27, one showing each per day.
