Three Walls, Motion Seats, and a 12-Year Gap
The hook here isn't the film itself, which longtime fans have seen. It's the format. According to Anime! Anime!'s report (a Japanese anime news site), this is the first time any Attack on Titan release has played in ScreenX, the three-sided projection system that extends the picture onto the left and right walls of the auditorium. Add 4DX and its premium ULTRA 4DX tier on top, and the October 23 run is pitched as a physical experience rather than a rewatch.
The last time Crimson Bow and Arrow played in a Japanese theater was its original 2014 run, which is why the source frames this as the film's return after roughly 12 years. The official movie site at shingeki.tv/movie_guren/ lists the same date and formats, and notes the 2014 site is still archived for anyone feeling nostalgic.
What the New Trailer Shows
The trailer, posted to the Attack on Titan Official YouTube channel, focuses on the very start of the story: Eren and the rest of the Training Corps facing Titans for the first time. That's the ground the film covers. Crimson Bow and Arrow is the first half of a two-movie recut of Season 1, which aired 25 episodes from April to September 2013, so expect the Colossal Titan at the wall, the Training Corps years, and the earliest Survey Corps material, just re-edited for a theatrical runtime.
The music carries over from the original film. Linked Horizon's "Guren no Zahyō" (紅蓮の座標) is the theme song, and Hiroyuki Sawano, who scores the series, handles the ending theme.
The Season 1 Team Behind It
Season 1 was animated at Wit Studio (Spy x Family) with production assistance from Production I.G, directed by Tetsurō Araki (Death Note) with Yasuko Kobayashi on series composition and Kyōji Asano on character design. Those are the credits the recut is built from, since the film re-edits the broadcast episodes rather than adding a new production team.
As background, Hajime Isayama's dark fantasy manga ran in Kodansha's Bessatsu Shonen Magazine from 2009 to 2021 and has passed 140 million copies in circulation worldwide. The TV anime started in 2013 and wrapped with The Final Season's final chapters in November 2023. Crimson Bow and Arrow, then, is the franchise going back to its first page in a screening format the series has never used before.
Looking Ahead
Crimson Bow and Arrow opens in ScreenX, 4DX and ULTRA 4DX theaters across Japan on Friday, October 23, 2026. Anime! Anime! also confirms that Attack on Titan: The Last Attack, the compilation film covering the series finale, will get the same ScreenX, 4DX and ULTRA 4DX treatment in Japan in 2027. No month has been given.
International screenings for either run have not been announced. For context, The Last Attack's original release opened in Japan on November 8, 2024 and reached North American theaters on February 10, 2025 through Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures, so an overseas leg isn't out of the question, but nothing is confirmed. The original 2014 cut of Crimson Bow and Arrow is currently listed on Prime Video in the US, and the TV series streams on Crunchyroll, Netflix and Hulu. Isayama's manga is published in English by Kodansha.
