Freckles, a Bandaged Arm, and a Licca-chan First
The doll is Licca-chan, Takara Tomy's flagship dress-up doll, fully made over as Maomao, the poison-testing apothecary at the center of The Apothecary Diaries. According to Oricon News, a Japanese entertainment news outlet, the design reproduces Maomao's trademark freckles and the bandage-style detail on her left arm, along with her hairstyle and costume.
The hair is the headline detail for collectors. To get close to Maomao's distinctive color, Takara Tomy created a hair color it has never used on a Licca-chan doll before. Her eyes are a calm blue chosen to match the character, and the outfit recreates the colors and silhouette from the anime.
The set includes the doll, a hair accessory, a top, a skirt, shoes, underwear, and a bandage. It's priced at ¥5,500 (tax included) and rated for ages 3 and up.
57 Million Copies and a Packed Fall Schedule
Takara Tomy says the collaboration was timed to the franchise's current momentum, and there is a lot of it. The Apothecary Diaries has passed 57 million copies in circulation worldwide, Season 3 starts airing in Japan on October 2, and the franchise's first theatrical film, The Apothecary Diaries: The Deceased Empress' Treasure, opens in Japanese theaters on December 11.
Overseas fans are a big part of that momentum. Oricon notes that Takara Tomy Arts' Apothecary Diaries capsule toys sold out early at Anime Expo 2026, a sign of how strong demand for the series' merchandise is outside Japan. Licca-chan herself began her North American rollout in March 2026, with Takara Tomy positioning the doll line as a way to bring Japanese fashion and culture to new markets. A Maomao collab checks both boxes at once: a globally popular anime character on Japan's most famous fashion doll.
Looking Ahead
Preorders open August 27 on Takara Tomy Mall, the company's official online store, ahead of the October 24 release in Japan. The doll is also planned for China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand, the United States, and Canada, though Oricon's report doesn't list separate overseas release dates.
For fans who want to pair the doll with the show, Season 3 premieres October 2 in Japan, and the series streams internationally on Crunchyroll. The Deceased Empress' Treasure follows in Japanese theaters on December 11; no international release date for the film has been announced.
