Luffy Meets a T-Rex, Conan Steps Into a Movie Poster

The two anime headliners each get artwork built around one of the park's signature film attractions. The One Piece × Jurassic Park design drops Luffy into the tropical, tree-covered Jurassic Park area, turkey leg in hand, having the time of his life next to a giant T-Rex. According to Japanese anime news site Anime Anime, the piece plays the series' sense of adventure against the scale of the park's dinosaur zone.

Detective Conan's design goes the homage route. Conan Edogawa and Professor Agasa appear in artwork modeled on the Back to the Future movie poster. Back to the Future itself just returned to the spotlight at the park through the Universal Cars and Stars Collection, a 25th anniversary special event. The whole lineup runs under the anniversary's "Discover U!!!" theme, and the report stresses that these designs can only be found at the park.

Two Franchises With Deep Roots at the Park

Neither crossover comes out of nowhere. One Piece has been a summer fixture at Universal Studios Japan since 2007, staging large-scale seasonal events that recreate the series' world and put guests alongside the Straw Hat crew. Detective Conan, whose TV anime celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, joined the park in 2017 through the Universal Cool Japan program and has run real-life escape game events there every year since, with guests solving cases alongside Conan.

Both creators sent congratulatory comments for the anniversary. Eiichiro Oda described a "chain of smiles," saying the staff's obvious enjoyment becomes next year's guests' smiles, and that the cycle naturally keeps going. Gosho Aoyama kept it simple, saying he enjoys the Detective Conan attraction every year.

Junji Ito's Tomie Crashes Halloween Horror Nights

Horror manga master Junji Ito drew brand-new art for the first-ever collaboration between his signature creation Tomie and the Street Zombies, the iconic ghouls of the park's Halloween Horror Nights. The artwork shows Tomie, the impossibly beautiful woman who comes back no matter how many times she is killed, smirking over a park thrown into chaos by the zombie horde. She struts down the street at the head of the pack. Ito also wrote new Tomie dialogue specifically for this collaboration, which the report singles out as a point of interest. The goods lineup built on the art includes T-shirts, keychains, and a range of other items aimed at both Tomie readers and Halloween Horror Nights regulars.

On the family-friendly end of the announcement, longtime park mascots Woody Woodpecker and Winnie Woodpecker are getting their first sticker set on LINE, Japan's dominant messaging app. The stickers use the 25th anniversary theme design and cover everyday phrases as well as invitations to the park.

Looking Ahead

The full merchandise line arrives this fall, though the Anime Anime report does not list exact on-sale dates or prices. Those details should surface on Universal Studios Japan's official site, which the report links.

For international fans, the source material is easy to catch up on in English: Viz Media publishes both One Piece and Ito's Tomie collections, and Detective Conan also circulates in the West under its older Case Closed localization. The merchandise itself, however, is tied to the park in Osaka, so for now this is a collaboration you have to fly in for.
