Subaru Walks Back Into His Own Murder Scene
The Recapture Arc opens with Episode 12 of the season, Episode 78 overall, titled "Korekara no Hanashi" (roughly, "A Talk About What Comes Next"). According to the synopsis published by Japanese entertainment site Dengeki Online, Subaru has taken the feelings of Emilia and the others to heart and resolved to fight as "Natsuki Subaru" once more. On waking from Return by Death, the first thing he does is come clean about his amnesia.
That honesty pays off. By declaring that he will recover both Rem and his own memories and bring everyone home safely, Subaru wins Ram's cooperation. Then he heads for the spiral staircase inside the tower. As the synopsis pointedly reminds us, that staircase is the murder scene where he was pushed from behind and fell to his death, twice.
Eiji Umehara wrote the episode, with season director Masahiro Shinohara co-handling storyboards. 中津環 (likely Tamaki Nakatsu) directs, and 三島千枝 (likely Chie Mishima) serves as chief animation director.
A New Enemy Lurks in the Recapture Arc PV
The new PV went up on the official Re:Zero YouTube channel on August 5. It revisits the struggles Subaru and his companions endured across the Loss Arc, then folds in new animation cuts, including glimpses of a new enemy. Who that enemy is, the trailer doesn't say; we'll find out once the episodes air.
The Recapture Arc runs eight episodes and forms the back half of Season 4, which studio White Fox split into two blocks. The 11-episode Loss Arc finished its broadcast in June and is now streaming in full in Japan. The new episodes hit 21 Japanese stations starting August 12.
Dengeki Online's report also rounds up two smaller releases. Episode 78 of the Re:Zero Break Time mini-anime sees Meili pass out after botching her first job, only to wake and find that Elsa has quietly finished it for her. There is also a new behind-the-scenes video from the voice recording sessions, the third of the season, this one centered on Emilia voice actor Rie Takahashi.
ABEMA Runs All 77 Episodes Free Before the Premiere
Ahead of the premiere, Japanese streaming platform ABEMA is hosting a free marathon of the entire series from August 8 through August 11, one season per day starting at 11:00 a.m. JST. The lineup covers all 77 episodes from Season 1 through the Loss Arc, plus the two OVAs, Memory Snow and The Frozen Bond.
Select episodes come with visual cast commentary, and Yūsuke Kobayashi, who voices Subaru, appears on every track. He is joined by Inori Minase (Rem) for Episode 18, Rie Takahashi for the Season 1 finale, and Satomi Arai (Beatrice) for Episode 7, among other pairings across the four days. The Loss Arc finale, Episode 77, closes the marathon with a three-person commentary from Kobayashi, Takahashi, and Arai.
Looking Ahead
The Recapture Arc premieres in Japan on August 12, with ABEMA and the anime-only streamer d Anime Store carrying new episodes first at 10:30 p.m. JST on Wednesdays; other Japanese services follow on Saturdays. Internationally, Season 4 has been streaming on Crunchyroll with episodes following the Japanese broadcast, and the Recapture Arc is expected to continue there from August 12.
On the print side, Yen Press publishes Tappei Nagatsuki's source light novels in English, while KADOKAWA handles the series in Japan. The anime is also marking its 10th anniversary this year, with a dedicated anniversary site collecting the celebrations.
