Subaru Finally Tells the Truth
Episode 78 carries the title "Korekara no Hanashi" (roughly, "A Talk About What Comes Next"), and according to the synopsis published by Japanese anime news site Anime Anime, the talk in question is a big one. The synopsis describes Subaru as entrusted, believed in, forgiven, and wished for. Taking in those feelings from Emilia and the others, he resolves to fight as "Natsuki Subaru." When he wakes from his latest Return by Death, the first thing he does is confess that he has lost his memories.
He follows the confession with a declaration: he will get Rem back, recover his own memories, and bring everyone home safely. That promise wins over Ram, and with her cooperation secured, Subaru heads for the tower's spiral staircase. The synopsis is blunt about what that location means. It is the murder scene where he has twice been pushed to his death.

Why Everyone Is Stuck in a Desert Tower
The Recapture Arc (奪還編) picks up the story that Season 4's first half, the Loss Arc, left hanging when it wrapped its 11-episode run in June 2026. The setup goes back to Season 3: Subaru's side won the battle for the water city of Priestella, but the cost was steep. Rem remains asleep because of the Gluttony authority, Crusch's memories were stolen, and Julius lost his name.
Searching for a way to save them, Subaru learned of Shaula, a "Sage" said to see and know all things. That made his next destination the Pleiades Watchtower, a far-flung tower rising out of the Augria Sand Dunes. Even Reinhard, the strongest "Sword Saint," could not conquer that great desert.
Director Masahiro Shinohara and animation studio WHITE FOX handle the season, which is structured as the 11-episode Loss Arc plus the 8-episode Recapture Arc. The source novels by Tappei Nagatsuki began on the Japanese web-novel platform Shosetsuka ni Naro in April 2012 and have been published under KADOKAWA's MF Bunko J imprint since January 2014, with worldwide series circulation topping 16 million copies including digital editions.
The Cast at the Tower, and an Ashnikko Opening
Yusuke Kobayashi returns as Natsuki Subaru, with Rie Takahashi as Emilia, Inori Minase as the still-sleeping Rem, and Rie Murakawa as Ram, whose cooperation becomes a key beat of Episode 78. The wider tower party and its threats are voiced by the returning Season 4 cast, including Fairouz Ai as Shaula.
The Recapture Arc also keeps the season's East-meets-West soundtrack pairings. The opening theme is "Recollect" by Konomi Suzuki featuring Ashnikko, and the ending theme is "Ender Ember" by MYTH & ROID featuring TK of the Japanese rock band Ling tosite sigure.
Looking Ahead
In Japan, Episode 78 airs August 12 on 21 stations nationwide, including TOKYO MX and AT-X, while ABEMA and d Anime Store stream new episodes Wednesdays at 10:30 p.m. JST ahead of the terrestrial broadcast. Other Japanese streaming services follow on Saturdays starting August 15.
