Sales Numbers That Outpace Demon Slayer
According to Japanese entertainment news outlet Oricon News, the manga hit 2.8 million copies in circulation with only six volumes in print, and the outlet frames that pace with a striking comparison. When Demon Slayer's anime adaptation was announced on June 4, 2018, that series stood at 2.5 million copies across 11 volumes.
The momentum goes well beyond bookstores. The series ranked No. 4 in the male-readers division of Kono Manga ga Sugoi! 2026, an annual best-of poll the Japanese manga industry watches closely. Related videos on YouTube and TikTok have passed 100 million combined views, and Oricon notes the title lands in Japan's top 10 trending topics every time a new chapter drops.
Cute Character Art Wrapped Around a Harsh Story
Nene Azuki's manga has run since September 2024 on Magazine Pocket, Kodansha's official manga app. The story is set in 2012 in Kabukicho, Shinjuku's nightlife district, and follows 12 months in the lives of two hostesses working the neighborhood's club scene: the experienced Yamada and the newcomer Mii-chan, an earnest rookie who can read neither kanji nor the room.
Mocked by the people around her and written off as a "poor thing," Mii-chan keeps showing up to work anyway, and Yamada slowly finds herself drawn to that persistence. The adorable character designs belie the story; per Oricon, the series pairs them with a thoroughly realistic picture of inescapable loneliness and a world that offers its characters no easy breaks.
The manga was also nearing its finish line at the time of the announcement. Azuki had already declared the series would conclude with its next volume, the seventh, putting the serialization in its final stretch just as the anime news landed.
A Wistful PV and a Hamster Named Hamukatsu
The announcement promotional video (PV) shows Mii-chan and Yamada holding hands in front of the Kabukicho Ichibangai gate while the two characters' voices look back on the days they spent together. Oricon describes the result as carrying a faint sense of impermanence, a fitting register for a story built around a single shared year.
Azuki's celebratory illustration shows the two heroines smiling side by side under the words "Congrats!! Anime Adaptation," with Hamukatsu, the hamster Mii-chan dotes on, tucked in near her hands. In her accompanying comment, Azuki thanked readers for supporting the series and said production is already moving forward with what she called a wonderful staff, adding, "I'm personally really looking forward to seeing how the world of Mii-chan and Miss Yamada expands through the kind of expression only animation can deliver."
Looking Ahead
For now, 2027 is the only production fact on the table. No studio, director, format, or cast has been announced; Oricon reports that staff and cast information will come at a later date.
The manga side has moved faster. Since this announcement, the serialization has ended as planned with volume 7, and Oricon's follow-up coverage reports circulation has climbed past 3 million copies.
English-speaking readers will be able to check out the source material legally: Seven Seas Entertainment licensed the manga in January 2026 under the title Mii-chan and Miss Yamada. No international streaming partner for the anime has been announced yet.
