A 5K Scan of the Original 35mm Film

The three-disc box was mastered from the original 35mm film with a 5K scan that, Japanese home video label VAP says, loses none of the detail in the source. The label's product page adds that the restoration also worked to remove the frame-to-frame vibration that scans of film this old tend to carry. Total runtime comes to 564 minutes of main programming, covering the 23 episodes that first aired in 1971, plus extras.

The set carries catalog number VPXY-72190 and lists at 29,700 yen with tax (27,000 yen before tax), or roughly $200. The on-disc bonus video is a PR reel for the box itself, and the package includes a booklet. Early buyers also get a set of three original pin badges while stock lasts.

No Lupin III TV series has been issued in 4K before now, according to Japanese entertainment news site Comic Natalie's report on the announcement. The release also coincides with the franchise's 55th anniversary as an anime.

The 1971 Series With Miyazaki and Takahata on Staff

Part I premiered in 1971 as the first TV adaptation of Monkey Punch's manga. Yasuo Ōtsuka handled animation direction. Episode direction credits go to Masaaki Ōsumi and to the directing group at A Production. Its members on this show included Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, eight years before Miyazaki directed The Castle of Cagliostro.

That staff list is a large part of why Part I is still revisited. It also explains why a scan that holds on to the grain and line quality of the 35mm source matters more here than it would on a digitally produced series.

For scale, the franchise's television run now totals 316 episodes across Part I through Part 6 and the spin-off Lupin the Third: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine. That figure is the pool Nippon TV drew from when it opened its 55th-anniversary fan vote earlier this year.

Looking Ahead

The box ships January 27, 2027 in Japan, and no 4K edition has been announced for other territories. For English-speaking fans, the standing option remains Discotek Media's 2022 Blu-ray set, released as Lupin the 3rd Part I: The Classic Adventures, which carries all 23 episodes with the Japanese audio plus a then-new English dub led by Tony Oliver as Lupin and Richard Epcar as Jigen. That release is HD, not 4K, and it predates this restoration.

Streaming is in better shape than the disc situation suggests. In the US, Part I is available on Crunchyroll and Prime Video, and free with ads on Tubi.

There is also more 55th-anniversary programming before the box arrives. Lupin III Masterpiece Selection starts October 3 on Nippon TV in a weekly late-night Saturday slot, running 13 episodes picked by fan vote: the top two from each of Part I through Part 6, plus the top pick from The Woman Called Fujiko Mine.
