An Elite-School Mahjong Comedy

Gokigenyou, Ikkyoku Ikaga? has been serialized in Houbunsha's Manga Time Kirara Carat magazine since 2022. The series follows Kitaōji Sae, a student at a prestigious girls' academy who struggles to connect with her classmates. When the school's most charismatic student, Jinnan Chisei, catches Sae playing mahjong on a phone app, the pair start bonding over tiles. The comedy is packed with relatable beginner moments that poke fun at the learning curve every new player faces.

Volume 5 of the manga released on June 26, 2026, the same day Japanese entertainment news site Comic Natalie reported the anime adaptation. A celebratory illustration by Unohana accompanied the announcement, depicting the series' four main characters: Sae, Chisei, Nonoka, and Junrei.

Author Tsukasa Unohana said she started the series wanting to create "a mahjong manga you can enjoy even if you don't know mahjong." She added that she's especially excited to see her characters voiced and animated, including their in-game mahjong avatars.

A Kirara Veteran at the Helm

Director Kaori (The Quintessential Quintuplets ∬, Yuyushiki), who also directed Stardust Telepath and Endro~!, has extensive Kirara adaptation experience. In a comment published alongside the announcement, Kaori revealed she has played mahjong for years and was thrilled when the offer came in, calling it "a case of my hobby becoming my job." She also confessed that, like protagonist Sae, she checks a morning three-player mahjong fortune every day.

Series composition goes to Kazuyuki Fudeyasu, whose credits include Is the Order a Rabbit? (another Kirara adaptation) and That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime. Character designer Mai Ōtsuka previously handled designs for The Demon Girl Next Door and Urara Meirocho. Felix Film, the studio behind Aharen Is Indecipherable, produces the animation.
