The New Key Visual Shows Its Three Leads Breaking Apart
The key visual is doing something more unsettling than standard sequel art. It depicts the portraits of Ayaka, Saber, and Sigma shattering and blending into one another. Original author Ryohgo Narita describes the image as the three being broken by the troubles ahead, then piecing themselves back together with each other's fragments as the false Holy Grail War grinds on. That reading comes straight from Narita's comment in the announcement, reported by Japanese gaming and entertainment outlet Famitsu alongside Aniplex's press release.
It follows an earlier teaser visual, which Narita notes showed Saber and company standing against a giant storm. A new promotional video announcing the production is also up on YouTube. As for what happens in the story itself, Narita is candid: even as the original author, he admits he thought, "How on earth do you turn this into an anime?!" He says the anime staff found the best possible answer, and that he plans to watch the new series as one more reader of his own work.
The Cast Knows Exactly Which Cliffhangers They Left Hanging
The first cour of the anime wrapped on March 28, 2026, and the three actors on the key visual all point to unfinished business. Kana Hanazawa (Mayuri Shiina in Steins;Gate), who voices Ayaka Sajyou, says the season ended right as Ayaka and Saber's relationship was deepening, and that she is thrilled to play what comes next.
Yuki Ono, who voices Saber, goes a step further and confirms he will be back "as Richard," a nod to his servant's true identity as the storied English king. Gakuto Kajiwara says Sigma's storyline stopped at a point that was too intriguing for his own good, and pleads for his character to be rewarded in the end. Shizuki Morii, who handles the original character drafts for the novels, credits fan support for the renewal and says she can't wait to sink back into the atmosphere of the strange Fake world.
A False Grail War on American Soil
Fate/strange Fake comes from Ryohgo Narita, the author of Baccano! and Durarara!!, who has been writing the novels for Dengeki Bunko since 2015 with TYPE-MOON credited on the original work. The premise takes the franchise's signature Holy Grail War to the United States for the first time, where a swarm of mages and heroic spirits collide in a war built on a fabricated foundation.
The TV anime is produced at A-1 Pictures, the studio that previously handled Fate/Apocrypha in 2017. Shun Enokido and Takahito Sakazume, who built their reputations on Fate/Grand Order animated commercials, co-direct, with Daisuke Daitō on series composition, Yūkei Yamada on character design, and Hiroyuki Sawano composing the music. The first cour premiered on January 3, 2026 and ran through its March finale, so the new series picks the story up from that stopping point.
Looking Ahead
The big missing piece is a date. Neither the Famitsu report nor the official announcement gives a premiere window for the new series, so the promotional video and key visual are what fans have to work with for now.
In the meantime, the first season is easy to catch up on. Crunchyroll streams the series in North America, Central and South America, Europe, Africa, Oceania, the Middle East, and CIS, with an English dub available. In Japan, it streams on ABEMA, dAnime Store, U-NEXT, Anime Hodai, and other services. Given that this announcement came out of an Anime NYC panel rather than a Japanese event, the international audience is clearly on Aniplex's mind; expect follow-up staff and schedule news as production moves along.
