A God-Tier Gamer Stuck in a Vampire Girl's Body
Destiny Unchain Online follows Kou Mitsuki (満月紅), a middle schooler whose player skill has earned him the in-game handle "Crim the Headhunter" (首狩りクリム). His father developed the full-dive VRMMO Destiny Unchain Online, and Kou signs on to test the game's new hardware. The build turns out to be riddled with bugs. According to Japanese entertainment news site Comic Natalie, Kou ends up locked into a beautiful vampire-girl avatar for a three-month test period, unable to log out, while a spawn glitch drops him in a forest far from every other player. Natalie frames the series as a coming-of-age adventure, and the Japanese subtitle spells out where it's headed: Kou's vampire girl eventually comes to be feared as the "Red Demon Lord" (赤の魔王), which Kodansha's official English edition renders as the snappier Crimson Devil.
From Web Novel to a 13-Volume Manga
resn started publishing the story on the web novel site Shōsetsuka ni Narō in May 2020, then moved it to the platform Kakuyomu in June 2021. Kodansha picked it up for its K Ranobe Books light novel label in November 2022, with illustrations by Yachimoto; three print volumes are out so far, the latest on May 29, 2026. Yachimoto also draws the manga adaptation, which has run on Magazine Pocket, Kodansha's manga app, since July 2022. That version reached volume 13 the same week as the anime announcement.
The reveal came with a newly drawn celebratory illustration from Yachimoto. In a short comment, resn thanked Yachimoto and everyone involved in the series, adding that they hope the announcement gives more people a chance to discover "DUO," the series' abbreviated title. A new official X account for the anime, @DUO_animePR, opened alongside the news.
Looking Ahead
The announcement stops at the green light: no studio, director, cast, or broadcast window yet, and no teaser trailer either. Updates will come through the anime's official X account. International fans do have a way in right now, though. Kodansha's K MANGA service has published the manga in English as Destiny Unchain Online: How I Became the Crimson Devil since March 2026, with new chapters arriving alongside the Japanese release. The original novels have not been announced for English release, and there's no word yet on international streaming for the anime.
