Kid's Origin Story, Rebuilt With New Animation

The July 26 pick is the more unusual of the two. Detective Conan vs. Kid the Phantom Thief is not a standard Conan movie but a 2024 theatrical recut of the TV series, stitched together from the episodes that introduced Kaito Kid, the moonlit magician thief, and set up his rivalry with Conan. According to a report from Japanese anime news site Anime Hack, the compilation covers Kid's origin and his first showdowns with Conan and Shinichi, drawing on classic episodes like "Conan vs. Kid the Phantom Thief" and "The Gathered Detectives! Shinichi Kudo vs. Kid the Phantom Thief."

The big selling point sits right at the start. Episode 76, where Conan and Kid first come face to face, was rebuilt with new animation for the film's opening, and the recut also includes newly produced Conan and Kid scenes that exist only in this version. The project came together because Kid is the key figure in Detective Conan: The Million-dollar Pentagram, the franchise's 27th theatrical film from 2024, and the compilation hit Japanese theaters as a lead-in to it.

The Lupin Crossover, Shown Uncut

The July 12 slot went to Lupin the 3rd vs. Detective Conan: The Movie, the 2013 theatrical crossover between Gosho Aoyama's boy detective and Monkey Punch's gentleman thief. BS12 aired the complete uncut version, starting at 7:30 p.m. rather than the block's usual 7 p.m. The film followed a 2009 TV special of the same matchup, this time produced as an all-new theatrical feature.

The premise is classic heist material: the police receive an advance notice targeting the Cherry Sapphire, a legendary, one-of-a-kind gem stored in a bank in Conan's home neighborhood of Beika. The sender's identity is, naturally, where the crossover kicks in.

One scheduling note from the Anime Hack article: Sunday Anime Theater takes July 19 off, so the two broadcasts land two weeks apart.

Looking Ahead

Detective Conan vs. Kid the Phantom Thief airs Sunday, July 26, 2026, at 7 p.m. on BS12 TwellV, a free-to-air Japanese satellite channel, as part of the weekly Sunday Anime Theater block.

International fans have a legal path to at least half of this lineup. Discotek Media released Lupin the 3rd vs. Detective Conan: The Movie on Blu-ray in North America in 2021, complete with an English dub. The 2024 compilation film is a different story: it streams on Netflix and Hulu within Japan, but no international streaming partner has been announced, so for now the rebuilt episode 76 footage remains a Japan-only watch.
