A Children's Encyclopedia Comes to Life

Yuru Yuru Zukan (ゆるゆる図鑑), Gakken's illustrated encyclopedia series that uses four-panel comics and cute illustrations to teach kids about the animal kingdom, is getting a TV anime adaptation. Japanese anime news site Animate Times reported the series will premiere in October 2026 as part of TV Tokyo's Animori! Sunday morning lineup.

The book series, running since 2017, builds on a simple premise: even scary creatures become approachable when drawn in a relaxed, lighthearted style. Across titles covering deep-sea creatures, dinosaurs, dangerous animals, sharks, jellyfish, and even yokai, the series pairs goofy four-panel strips with factual ecology breakdowns. That formula has moved 1.24 million copies as of June 2026.

What Is 'Light Anime'?

The adaptation is being produced through Animation ID, a joint venture between IMAGICA Infos and Dai Nippon Printing (DNP). Animation ID specializes in a proprietary production method called Light Anime, which converts illustrated source material directly into animation without traditional frame-by-frame drawing. The technique runs at a fraction of conventional anime production costs and timelines, making it well suited for short-format shows aimed at younger audiences.

Animation ID has previously produced titles like Lockdown Zone: Level X, Kanagawa Elves, and You Don't Know Gunma Yet: Reiwa Version using the same method. Yuru Yuru Zukan fits that catalog: a proven print property with strong visuals that translates well into bite-sized animated segments.

The anime will air as a short within Animori!, TV Tokyo's Sunday morning block that launched in April 2026. The block bundles multiple short anime series into a single 7:00 AM time slot across six TV Tokyo affiliate stations. Current Animori! titles include Odekake Kozame Season 2 and Kumaba Season 3.

Looking Ahead

An official X (formerly Twitter) account for the anime launched alongside the announcement on Animate Times, but no cast, staff, or trailer details have been shared yet. Streaming and international distribution plans remain unannounced.

The Yuru Yuru Zukan book series is published by Gakken and has not been released in English. Whether the anime opens a path to international distribution will likely depend on whether a streaming partner picks up the Animori! block. For now, the October 2026 broadcast is confirmed only for Japanese TV Tokyo affiliates.
