A Wall Full of 'Natsuki Subaru Was Here'

Japanese streaming platform ABEMA's viewer comment data for the Season 4 finale shows what stopped viewers cold. The number-one most-commented scene was Subaru waking up outside his ice prison to find the words "Natsuki Subaru was here" carved across every surrounding wall, with no memory of how it got there or how he escaped.

The moment caps an episode full of disorientation. According to a report from anime news site Otaku Souken, the full top-three ranking breaks down like this:

  1. Subaru discovering the carved text on the walls
  2. The Witch of Envy whispering "I love you" as Subaru writhes in his sleep
  3. Emilia confessing her feelings to a Subaru who doesn't remember her

That Emilia's confession landed third is the surprise. The source article's own headline frames it as the benchmark to beat, and viewers chose pure psychological horror over the emotional climax.

What Happened in Episode 77

The finale, titled "Re: Zero kara Hajimaru Isekai Seikatsu" (Re: Starting Life in Another World from Zero), opens with Subaru caught searching for Meili's vanished corpse. Ram, convinced he's an impostor, traps him in an ice cage. Subaru desperately insists he's lost his memories, but Ram isn't buying it and knocks him unconscious with wind magic.

When he comes to, he's somehow outside the cage, surrounded by that wall of carved messages. And behind him stands Reid Astrea, a figure who should be on the fourth floor of the Pleiades Watchtower, not standing right there.

Fans of Tappei Nagatsuki's original novels (over 16 million copies in circulation) will recognize the episode title's pointed word swap. The series is called "Re: Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu" (to start), but this episode switches to "Hajimaru" (to begin, on its own). A shift from active to passive, from choosing to restart to having no choice in the matter.

The Loss Arc by the Numbers

White Fox's fourth season opened on April 8, 2026, with the first cour covering the "Loss Arc" across 11 episodes. Episode 77 aired June 17 as the cour finale, with Yoshiko Nakamura on script, Kazuhiro Ozawa handling storyboards, and Haruka Sagawa pulling double duty as both character designer and chief animation director.

ABEMA has been running these most-commented scene rankings throughout the season, tracking which scenes hit hardest with Japanese viewers week by week. Earlier in the cour, Episode 74's "Return by Death" sequence topped its own week's chart.

Looking Ahead

The second cour, titled the "Recapture Arc," premieres August 12, 2026, picking up right where the Loss Arc's cliffhanger left off. It's scheduled for eight episodes.

Crunchyroll streams Re:Zero Season 4 internationally with same-day subtitles and an English dub across North America, Europe, Latin America, Oceania, and Southeast Asia. Yen Press publishes the English-language light novels, with the series well past the arcs currently being adapted.

With fewer than seven weeks until the Recapture Arc begins, the wall-carving mystery and Reid Astrea's impossible appearance give viewers plenty to theorize about over the mid-season break.
