An Obi Comment That Talks Back
Manga volumes in Japan ship wrapped in an obi, the removable paper band around the cover, and a short line of praise from a famous author is standard there. Jujutsu Kaisen author Gege Akutami wrote something else. Volume 12 of Girl Meets Rock! (ふつうの軽音部) carries a newly drawn illustration of Rin Koyama (幸山厘) alongside a comment written as a back-and-forth exchange between Akutami and the character. Japanese entertainment news site Anime! Anime! describes the exchange as playful in a way only Akutami would write.
Koyama handles bass in Heartbreak, the band that protagonist Chihiro Hatono winds up in, so the illustration spotlights a bandmate rather than the lead. Both series are published by Shueisha, and the volume's credits reflect the crossover with two copyright lines: one for Kuwahari (クワハリ) and Tetsuo Ideuchi, and a second for Akutami.
A Life-Size High School Band Drama
Girl Meets Rock! follows Hatono, a brand-new first-year who loves the understated side of Japanese rock and throws herself head-first at band practice and high school life. Anime! Anime! frames it as a full-force youth drama at exactly life size. The series carries that down to the gear: Hatono plays a Fender Telecaster and Koyama a Fender Jazz Bass, with the band's instruments drawn as real models.
Kuwahari writes the series and Ideuchi draws it. The current version has run on Shueisha's Shōnen Jump+ app since January 2024, following Kuwahari's original solo run on the amateur-submission platform Jump Rookie! in 2023.
What Volume 12 Includes
Beyond the Akutami obi, volume 12 collects bonus manga available only in the collected volumes, a section tracking how the character designs changed across the run, family rundowns for each Heartbreak member, and production notes from behind the scenes. It is priced at ¥770 including tax and goes on sale in Japan on Friday, October 2, 2026.
Shueisha has also opened the first three volumes for free reading between September 28 and October 11, 2026, on Shōnen Jump+ and other ebook storefronts. That campaign is limited to Japanese storefronts, so it is of little use to readers outside the country.
Looking Ahead
English readers have two routes in. Shueisha publishes the series in English on MANGA Plus as Girl Meets Rock!, free to read in most regions. Seven Seas Entertainment handles the print edition and released volume 1 in August 2026, with volume 2 listed for November 3, 2026. That leaves the English print run ten volumes behind Japan for now.
No anime adaptation has been announced. There is also no word on whether Akutami's illustration will appear on the digital edition of volume 12, since obi art typically belongs to the physical printing.
