A Vermeer Tie-In With the Museum's Blessing
The centerpiece item is a reproduction print that recasts Frieren, the elf mage from Kanehito Yamada and Tsukasa Abe's Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, in the pose of Johannes Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring. According to Japanese anime news site Anime Anime, the piece was produced to coincide with the "Vermeer: Girl with a Pearl Earring" exhibition currently running at the Nakanoshima Museum of Art in Osaka, where the real painting is on loan from the Mauritshuis in The Hague.
This is an authorized piece, not an unofficial homage. The credit line on the artwork reads "Image inspired by Vermeer's 'Girl with a Pearl Earring', authorized by the Mauritshuis Museum," with the museum listed alongside Shogakukan in the copyright block. The Osaka exhibition itself runs through September 27, 2026, so the Ginza pop-up overlaps its final week.
At the pop-up, the Frieren x Vermeer print gets its own special display, and orders are taken on-site on a made-to-order basis.
What's in the 100-Item Lineup
TOKYO MANGA BASE is Shogakukan's merchandise arm for manga-licensed goods, running pop-up shops in Japan and abroad along with a cross-border online store for fans outside Japan. For this event, the company picked products it calls "genga art" (genga meaning original artwork): pieces built around manga title pages and color illustrations, chosen to fit the gallery-like concept of the venue.
The venue is the GINZA ATRIUM space inside Ginza Tsutaya Books, the art-focused bookstore on the sixth floor of the GINZA SIX shopping complex in Tokyo. The lineup includes:
- Reproduction prints of Frieren: Beyond Journey's End and Banana Fish artwork, which are otherwise sold only on a made-to-order basis through LIFETUNES MALL, Shogakukan's official online shop.
- "Metal Canvas Art," a 2.5D format that uses a special process to give the illustration a raised, layered look. Rei Hiroe's Black Lagoon is the title shown in the Anime Anime piece.
- Over 100 items in total, all sold for the duration of the event only.
Banana Fish, Akimi Yoshida's 1980s New York crime drama, and Black Lagoon, Hiroe's mercenary action series, are both long-standing Shogakukan properties, which explains why they share shelf space with a series as current as Frieren.
Overseas Fans Can Order for the First Time
The part of this announcement that matters most to readers outside Japan is a new experiment: some of the exhibited items are being sold at the same time through the TOKYO MANGA BASE cross-border store. The service lets people living abroad order directly from a Japanese shop and have goods delivered to their door. It currently covers 10 countries and regions, including the United States, Canada, Taiwan and South Korea.
Anime Anime notes that this is the first time reproduction prints have been offered to overseas buyers through the service. Shogakukan's own press release on PR TIMES lists the cross-border sales window as September 20 through October 19, 2026, which gives international buyers about three weeks longer than the physical shop.
