The Hero's Party Returns for a Theme Park Crossover
USJ's official X account announced on May 21 that a collaborative mini anime with Frieren: Beyond Journey's End will premiere the following day at noon JST. The brief teaser describes a story in which the original hero's party stumbles upon a mysterious magic book. Even Frieren can't identify the spell inside — but it apparently has something to do with "USJ."
The deliberate choice to feature the hero's party (Himmel, Heiter, Eisen, and Frieren together) rather than the current-timeline trio of Frieren, Fern, and Stark is already generating buzz. Fan reactions in the Oricon report include comments like "the fact that they deliberately went with the hero's party" and "I'm way too excited for this" — and it's easy to see why. Flashbacks to the original party are some of the series' most emotionally resonant moments, so dropping them into a lighthearted theme park tie-in is a fun creative swing.
A Bigger USJ Collaboration Kicks Off May 30
This mini anime is part of a larger Frieren x USJ collaboration launching under the Universal Cool Japan 2026 banner. The centerpiece is Frieren Story Walk: Journey of Reminiscence, a new immersive walkthrough attraction at USJ's Stage 18 that uses massive screens, projection mapping, and meticulously recreated sets to let guests physically walk through scenes from the series alongside Frieren and her companions.
The collaboration also includes a Frieren Story Ride (an overlay on an existing coaster) and a themed restaurant called Frieren: Reminiscence Restaurant. All three experiences run from May 30, 2026, through January 11, 2027.
It's worth noting that this USJ mini anime appears to be a separate production from the ongoing "XX no Mahō" (●●の魔法) chibi comedy shorts that have been running on TOHO animation's YouTube channel since before Season 2 launched. That series — now at 22 episodes — uses super-deformed character designs for comedic vignettes. The USJ short, by contrast, centers the hero's party in what reads like a narrative setup rather than a gag premise.
About Frieren: Beyond Journey's End
For anyone not caught up: Frieren: Beyond Journey's End follows the elf mage Frieren, who watched her human companions age and die after their party defeated the Demon King. Decades later, she sets out on a new journey — this time to understand the human emotions and bonds she once took for granted. The manga by Kanehito Yamada and Abe Tsukasa is published by Shogakukan and has been one of the most acclaimed series of its generation.
The anime adaptation, produced at Madhouse (Death Note, One-Punch Man), premiered in fall 2023. Season 2 has been airing since January 16, 2026, in NTV's Friday 11 PM slot and is currently deep into the Revolte arc.
Looking Ahead
The mini anime drops May 22, 2026, at noon JST — no word yet on whether it will land on the TOHO animation YouTube channel or USJ's own social channels. The physical USJ collaboration opens eight days later on May 30.
For international fans, Frieren Season 2 streams on Crunchyroll. The source manga is available in English from Viz Media. Whether this USJ-specific mini anime will be accessible outside Japan isn't confirmed, but previous TOHO animation shorts for the series have been region-free on YouTube, so there's reason to be optimistic.
